    Dutch band Focus

In my teens in the mid 70s I discovered Focus.Yes that was the band with that song with all that yodelling and blitzkrieg guitar. But there was so much more to them than Hocus Pocus.I collected everything on them.My mates couldn't understand why I liked such drivell.Play zep, play purple etc they would say, anything but focus.Only one person liked focus and that was my late father and he was a jazz muso.So any takers?
  2. I always liked the supposed quote from Keith Moon that "they would go down like a lead balloon" on the naming of the band. The first Rush album (Working Man)was mistaken as the new Zep as was mentioned above.Mick Box of Uriah Heep who Rush were supporting in the early years said look out Zep.Unfortunately Geddy Lee didn't look like Plant

    Swan Song (the unreleased track)

I think this is mentioned somewhere that Swan/Midnight has a close cousin in Ten Years Gone therefore not on PG.Both the jazzy mid sections, the quiet guitar interludes, the loud bits, etc.I liked the Firm a lot and bought the albums when released.Paul is notoriosly fiery but he is a great blues belter.I compare him to the late Jimmy Deware of Robin Tower fame.I think he cops a lot of flak because he is a completely different singer than Plant as was the case with Sir Frederick.Yes Paul did play rhythm guitar most notably on Radioactive,a song I didn't go much on and released as a single.I think Page and Rogers sounded great together despite what others say. No,there was no Immigrant Song or Stairway but there was Midnight Moonlight which was their best.
  4. I have thought long and hard about getting the four symbols tattooed on my forearn but not on my back,I want to see them.It would make a change from the devils, skulls and naked women I have elsewhere that i have had for twenty years plus.
  5. I love Dy'er Maker and i like the latest re master of the Crunge but I still think it could have wound up on Coda and thrown in Walters Walk instead.Houses is lovely album, sought of laid back in a way,a good summer album, but it lacks a rocker like WW.Anyway, would love to have heard Tea For One live, and just hear what Page 's solo would be like.
  6. I agree with the musicianship and complexity and I am musician and its hard one to nail down, but I don't like the way it was recorded particularly Plants vocals, and where it is on the album.I have no problem with Dy'er Maker.
  7. Musically they should have left The Crunge off THOTH.It just disrupted the flow of the album. On the latest re master it's a lot better.I know it was meant as a bit of a laugh but it should have been a b side or left till Coda. There was still plenty of material about at the time which ended up on PG.Fashion wise Page looked like a back up musician for the Bee Gees at Knebworth with his club disco garb. The band as a whole just didn't look rock n roll, for want of a better word.

Jimmy Page Responds to Keith Richards

Yep i'm one of those blasted Rush fans, always going against the grain.Zep and Rush stand proudly side by side on my shelf.

Jimmy Page Responds to Keith Richards

    Page 'manufactured' Zep.Grant handled 'business'.
  10. Could be something to do with Coors beer.Frilly Coot,Frothy Coors?.We all know how Zep love being sued.

    Deluxe editions etc

Agreed that the Firm and Out rider seem a bit unloved even by Zep fanatics.Personally I loved both but even I would balk at laying out $ for expanded, remastered editions of these albums.

    Jimmy Page Session Man

I like musicians and bands that have identity.I can tell when it's Page,Blackmore,Knopfler,Gilmor,Lifeson, etc when there playing.I remember seeing the film clip to the Stones, One Hit To The Body for the first time and hearing these bendy lead lines all over the place. My mate and me just looked at each other and said'thats gotta be Page'.I don't really like bands like Steely Dan,even though the music well done and the vocals are distinctive enough to say yeah that's Steely Dan ,it just sounds a little in personable.Just my little rant.

    Jimmy Page Session Man

Session work usually means going in and reading off charts or music and doing your bit but to the producers or lesser degree the artists direction. This still happens today.Page hadn't really found his style yet and he was mainly doing these sessions to pay the bills.Ritchie Black more and others were doing the same. Some musicians are happy doing sessions ,it pays the bills, but dare I say it these people are great musicians but don't seem to have the artistic flair like Page had with Zep.I had a 2cd of Pages sessions that I picked up in a reject shop. There was very little evidence that you could tell it was Page playing.
  14. Out on the Tiles.I remember a band I was in tried it and we couldn't get it, and that was before we thought about the vocals. That's The Way.Saw a folk band do it,acoustic guitar, bass, flute, autoharp, female vocals.Magic. Tea for One.Many say its too slow and plodding. But it breathes,Plants vocals are world weary but haunting as is Page's magic solo.

Dazed and Confused: Which TSRtS version is better?

As mentioned the original vinyl is what grew up on (since 77) and that's what I prefer although sonically the re master is a gas.I didn't know it was a cut and paste till read this thread.Pardon my ignorance.

BBC sessions deluxe out September 16!!!!

Haven't been here for awhile and been out of touch on all things Zep apart from some court case.Just read about BBC re master.I will be getting the cd version unless I win the lottery.I notice the comments above and question how can you improve on radio broadcasts as i believe the third was taped off a radio as the original studio tapes were wiped.I know my way around most studio technology but just wondering if the other discs are going to be any different, enhanced mono maybe?Doesn't look like ol' Jim will be strutting the stage soon, too busy twiddling knobs
  17. All Of My Love is a let down on the companion.A lo-fi mono? mix that Page just seems to have tossed out.I think he has done the song a disservice. He has stated that he has never really liked the song and yes it is a bit light and poppy ballad.Whole Lotta Love it ain't.It features some lovely guitar and that gorgeous keyboard solo. And it would have been no trouble at all to tack on that extended solo. And of course it's Roberts lament to his son.AND it was written by Jones and Plant.AND the album is generally veiwed as Jones and Plants.AND could this be why the companion in general is lacklustre.Maybe i am wrong but i think Coda may have received more attention. After coming after the Epic Carouselambra which features the 'more upfront guitar'we are suddenly brought down to a muddy AOML.

    Favourite led zeppelin vinyl?

I had all the vinyl (and cassettes!)back in the day until I sold nearly all my collection, over 4,000 lps,to finance a deposit on a house in the early 90s.My faves were PG both for the music and cover.I had japanese pressings of the first four lps with the third lp being a fave with its thick cover and spinning wheel and a huge poster of the back cover(and a band history in japanese)

    Zeppelin with Black Sabbath

Bonzo was best man at Tony Iommi's wedding.Bonzo got absolutely shitfaced the night before and when Tony took him home in the early hours with some abuse from Pat he wondered if he would make the wedding.Sure enough Bonzo turned up next morning in his suit as best man and chauffer.Read Tony's biography Iron Man for the full story with a pic of the wedding.Bonzo was also in the wings at a Sabs gig when he said that Ronnie Dio had a great voice for a midget which didn't go down to well with RJD.

    All of My Love;A Disservice?

I have just burnt a copy of the companion with AOML and IAGC replaced by the original album versions.Sounds and flows much better.Side 2 of the album is a gas.

    All of My Love;A Disservice?

Whole Lotta Love blew me out on the radio when i was a kid in the early 70s.As i have matured All Of My Love gets more air time. The last time WLL was played was when LZ11 reissue came out then quietly filed away.

    Companion discs are rubbish

IMO i think for the most part the companions have been great but i can see where most fans have felt underwhelmed. The more tambourine mixes have been a waste of time but i am happy that they are there. As mentioned ITTOD has been the most disappointing with only ITE and Carouselambra standing out.Why on earth Page would put out lo-fi mono mixes is beyond me and yet he is reluctant to put out polished up bootleg rehearsals.I do however agree with Page that there couldn't have been two much left in the can and this will probably be the last of it as far as studio stuff goes.If ever my other favourite band Rush did a similar thing, which i am sure they won't,there would be no extra songs because they worked on each song till they got it right, similar to Zep.Perhaps more cowbell on YYZ Mr Peart.

I'm really over the moon with The Epic, I just can't stop playing it.Everything is so clear and Pages guitar in the middle is gorgeous.I stick my neck out and say I prefer it over the original mix but then that's been around a long time. Now if Page had only done something with All of My Love,I'm Gonna Crawl.Horrible muddy, mono??? mixes.
