Jahfin
Happy Belated Birthday Bob Dylan......I only came to appreciate Bob Dylan in the last year thanks to a friend. Well, I love good lyricists so clearly I missed the boat, big time! This is an interesting alt. version of Tangled Up in Blue. Not sure if this is available in his extensive back catalog but sure wouldn't mind having this one on vinyl. Missy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZhwyrUvV_s I'm not sure if it's the same version but there's an outtake of "Tangled Up In Blue" on the Bootleg Series Volumes 1-3: Rare and Unreleased 1961-1991 that's well worth seeking out. Jahfin
Do you believe Dylan to be undeserving of the award? It's really hard to tell when the majority of your replies are emoticons without any sort of elaboration.

MadScreamingGallery
Bob Dylan Awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom (Rolling Stone) I think this is a well-deserved honor for the kid who left the Iron Range, influenced many through his poetic lyrics, and became an American treasure. From everything I've read and heard about the man, Bob Dylan loves this country and its people in the way that Woody Guthrie loved it. I've spent many years in impoverished countries where freedom of speech (including protest songs) is not a right and not protected and, even in those places, we encountered people who could recite many of Dylan's lyrics verbatim. ursineprince
yes, congratulations to Bob. i love Dylan although I prefer 'Dylan the Rock star' to early acoustic Dylan. unlike many on here, my favourite albums include some of the more recent ones Time Out of Mind and Love and Theft. i also love some of the 70s albums blood on the tracks, planet waves, street legal etc and the later 60s albums, blonde on blonde, JWH and Highway 61. there are some great moments from the 80s Jokerman and Brownsville girl being two of them. why wasnt some of the stuff on bootleg series 1-3 on Infidels? esp Blind willie mctell. it beggars belief to be honest. Oh Mercy is all brilliant. i also strongly disagree with an opinion i get told alot that 'bob's songs are better done by other people' not in my opinion they arent. there is something wonderful about his delivery. Jahfin
Welcome to the board. I like a lot of Dylan's new records as well. Some folks, especially on boards such as this, seem to have no interest in listening to his latter day records. It's as though their musical development became stunted somewhere along the way and nothing after 1980 is deemed worthy of their attention. As for the Bootleg Series, there's tons of great stuff there which is a testament to just how outstanding his entire body of work is overall. To top that off, there's also the unofficial bootleg series that have been compiled by fans. Even though I've never heard any of those, it's my understanding that they outshine the official series. Jahfin
Real nice review (or more accurately, preview) here of the upcoming new Dylan album Tempest (which drops on September 11th) from Allan Jones, the editor of Uncut.
Jahfin
Preview of a new Dylan track from his upcoming new album Tempest, this one is called "Early Roman Kings". It makes it's debut as the backing track to this trailer for the Cinemax series Strike Back. Another new song from the album, "Scarlet Town", will be unveiled when the series premieres on August 17th. http://youtu.be/HHLsThejspo
Strider
A song about John Lennon...a 14-minute, 45 verse epic about the Titanic...it appears Dylan's latest album "Tempest" at least has the potential to be better than his last album. "Together Through Life" was the first of his recent run of albums that I consigned to the junk pile after only a few listens. It didn't speak to me at all and I found it musically boring, too. "Tempest", one hopes, is a return to form. Here's a preview by Randy Lewis of the L.A. Jahfin
According to a recent article I read, the Titanic song also includes a nod to Leonardo DiCaprio. I'm not so sure how I feel about that but I'll give it a listen before passing judgement. For whatever it's worth, I wasn't a huge fan of Together Through Life either, especially considering the musicians taking part and that Robert Hunter collaborated with him on some (if not all) of the songs. As for the positive reviews of Tempest, I read one the other day myself (see post #165, though they purposely didn't get into a whole lot of detail. Not good news that Dylan doesn't have better musings than Leonardo DiCaprio - although the guy's in every other freaking movie, these days. Great Gatsby, in 3D - WTF is that? Robert Hunter is still active? When I hear his name, the first thing I think about is the ultimate stoner's song: "Promontory Rider". Gotta hum it to myself, not having it on any record or CD, though...
Jahfin
Like I said, I've got to hear it before passing judgement. In recent years he's also mentioned Alicia Keys, James Joyce and Billy Joe Shaver in some of his songs and I didn't really have any problem with that. And yes, Robert Hunter is most definitely still kickin'. In addition to Dylan, he's also collaborated with Jim Launderdale, Los Lobos and Mickey Hart in the past few years. The first time I ever heard anything of his outside of the Dead was the Tales of the Great Rum Runner's LP. I also have Tiger Rose in my collection but I've never given it much more than a cursory first listen after finding it in the budget bin several years ago. Probably because I've never been real big into spoken word records unless of course it's along the lines of Richard Pryor or George Carlin. Jahfin
Whhoooaaaahhhhh, Neellllleeeyyyyy! I've personallly seen Jim Launderdale perform - and he sucks donkey balls!!!! Not a huge fan myself but I did see him perform during The American Beauty Project at Page Auditorium at Duke University a couple of years ago along with Ollabelle (which includes Levon Helm's daughter Amy), Catherine Russell and Aiofe O'Donovan (from Crooked Still) and thought he and the others did a very commendable job. It was a salute to the more roots oriented dimension of the Dead so the focus was largely on the American Beauty (hence the name) and Workingman's Dead albums. ZosofanCMR
Saw Bob two years ago in Portland. The voice is rough to be sure, but the show was fantastic. "Ballad of a Thin Man" holds a special place in my heart and when I heard and saw the man himself sing it, it was an intense feeling

Well, I saw him with Hot Tuna, and all he did was sing songs about alligators and alley cats. He'd pop in for a song or two, then leave the stage to applause. Hey, Jim - we're clapping because you're leaving. Soon as he came back for the third time, with the crowd dead silent, someone yelled "not THIS guy AGAIN?" What a staredown he got from Jorma! Talk about an uncomfortable moment...
joe (Liverpool)
In the 80s I was given a mint copy of Live at Budokhan, which had not for resale promo only stamped on it. I gave it to my mate as he was a huge Dylan fan, he was impressed. So much so that when I lent him my Ummagumma, he never reurned it.
