Electrophile
How about the Interstate system. Yes, I know that the Germans had the autobahn first, but we as usual took it to a much grander scale. I really couldn't perceive trying to motor around without it. It was one of Eisenhower's greatest achievements as President. He made it possible for people in Seattle to get to someone in New York, without it taking a month. Also, with the country's push toward suburbia after WWII, there needed to be a way for people to commute from their jobs in the inner cities/downtown areas, to their homes outside that area. Not every city had the benefit of a great mass public transit system like Chicago and New York. Even then though, you parked at the city limits, and then took a train into the city. So you had to get from your home to that parking lot.
