lzzoso Posted January 19, 2011 Share Posted January 19, 2011 In MY opinion, Bobby De Niro IS the greatest actor of all-time. I am sure many would agree with me and (probably) many more would not. Remember, I did say that this is just my opinion. After Jimmy Page and Robert Plant and John Paul Jones, Robert De Niro is the man I would want to meet the most. If some of you happened to have read my ask Jimmy Page One (1) Question topic, my question to Jimmy would be, have you ever met Robert De Niro. I said that because I consider Jimmy Page and Robert De Niro to be the best at what each other does for a living. Jimmy Page is the Greatest Guitar Player of all-time and Robert De Niro is the Greatest Actor of all-time. (The same can be said for Robert Plant and John Paul Jones). If I ever met Mr. De Niro my question to him would be, have you ever met Jimmy Page and what do you think of Led Zeppelin and their Music? Of course if they have met each other in the past (Jimmy and Bobby) then that would be a story I would love to hear from either of them (both, if possible). Anyway, back on topic. Robert De Niro is the Greatest. If some of you disagree, all I can say is watch: Mean Streets, Godfather Part II, Taxi Driver, Deer Hunter, Raging Bull, Angel Heart, Midnight Run, Goodfellas, Awakenings, Casino, Cape Fear, Casino and Heat. However, I believe he is not in the same league as Mr. De Niro. I would venture to guess that even Johnny Depp himself would admit that. I think that Johnny Depp is in the generation that would acknowledge that the Robert De Niro's and Al Pacino's of the acting world have influenced and inspired those of his (Johnny's) generation (of which I am one). In the same way that Jimmy Page has inspired and influenced hundreds of great guitar players. There are the originals and then there are the imatators. De Niro's sell out to mindless comedies aside, some of my favorite actors would be Robert Duvall and Jeff Bridges. Bridges' performance in Crazy Heart and True Grit were nothing short of phenomenal. There were many great actors of the 1940s and 1950's that have to be mentioned as well as the obviouslike Pacino, Hoffman, Eastwood, just for a few examples. He just has this indescribable, intangible charm in it that blows me away. I wish I could be more specific, but there's just something fascinating to watch about him in that role, and I really can't pinpoint what it is. There IS something about Robert De Niro's role as the young Vito Corleone in Godfather II that is beyond brilliant acting. He totally immersed himself in the role by watching Marlon Brandos mannerisms and facial expressions in the first Godfather. Bobby also went to Sicily and learned the Sicilian dialect that he used in the film. About 90% of De Niros dialogue in Godfather II was in Sicilian. Robert's brilliant portrayal won him is first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. It was considered a supporting role because Al Pacino was the lead actor in the movie. I am cool with that. Opinions are opinions. Everyone has them. I am not hung up on this Godfather thing as you put it. It is one of the greatest movies of all-time. It is the American Film Institutes (AFI) #2 movie of all-time. That is a fact and not my opinion (however, I admit that it is someone(s) elses opinion). If the AFI ranks it as the #2 movie ever, then I have to give it (them) some credence. That is their whole reason for being an American Film Institution, to rank movies according to popularity, social impact, box office, etc... What I am hung up on is the Talents and Acting Versatility of one Robert De Niro. That I will say and I would and do not make any excuses for that. I don't think I could select his greatest performance because there have been so many, but my favorite is the role of Jimmy Conway in Goodfellas. Hi Steve, I would have to disagree with you somewhat, American Actors always seen to portray Themselves rather than take on a Characters Attributes, unless you are saying that all Mafioso Act like De Niro? this is the same for John Wayne, Sinatra, et all. The one I said before who differs is Rod Steiger, for his performance alone as Napoleon in the film Waterloo I would have him down as my Best American Character Actor, and in many other films he takes on the Characters of who he is portraying, most other actors don't, they Portray themselves and either don't or cant play the Character.
