Jahfin
These bands are a dime-a-dozen around Detroit. Motown variants you can find in any bar. Blah blah blah is right... I'm admittedly not the hugest fan of the Alabama Shakes myself but I am very glad to see them become as popular as they have, especially during a time when the mainstream music world needs a shot of authenticity and genuineness. What sets them apart isn't just their innate R & B and Soul sensibilities, it's their ability to flat out rock your fucking face off. You're not going to get that from listening to a record or by watching a YouTube clip, that can only be experienced by seeing them live and in person. Until you've actually done that, your opinion, no matter how well informed you may think it is, doesn't hold water with me. Why? Because I had similar reservations about them; that is, until I saw them in concert. There's a reason why those Motown wannabes in Detroit are still slumming it out in the clubs and the Alabama Shakes are opening for the likes of Neil Young & Crazy Horse and Jack White, playing Bonnaroo and are selling out shows nationwide and in Europe, it's because they've got that something special that sets them apart from all the rest. If they didn't, they never would have gotten Patterson Hood's attention and they'd still be playing in Athens, AL.

In a strange turn of events, Patterson Hood will be opening for them on two dates in Germany coming up in November. Of course, it if was a full on Truckers show, I'm sure it'd be the other way around but it's still something no one could have seen coming a year ago. jimmie ray
I could use lots of smiley faces - especially those beer clanking ones that some us on every other sentence. Would that make it better to understand, for those who just read what they want into peoples' posts, and always twist it into the most negative way? Yes, Walter - I was referring to the explosion of British blues music after the late 1950's influence of Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Bo Diddly, Chuck Berry, etc... I do like to see them from other posters, though. If people don't get me, which a lot of times they don't, I just roll with it. BTW, I knew what you meant. Jahfin
What's that they say about sarcasm not translating well to the internet, "using sarcasm online is like winking on the telephone"? No matter how well intentioned (which it obviously was in this case), it doesn't always work. That said, I also have a very sarcastic, deadpan sense of humor that others don't always get and that's not just online.
jimmie ray
I guess that if your conversing in person with someone, and give them a smack on the back or kick in the shin - then they would obviously know that there's some sarcasm or humor within a seemingly inappropriate statement. Are there any smiley faces available that can portray these actions?

I'm not a big emoticon user myself but if you can come up with one that helps to accurately convey sarcasm you may soon find yourself rolling in the dough. Then again, I'm not sure exactly how royalties for emoticons work.
