  1. And Status Quo kept it going for...hell, I lost count, haha. Longevity doesn't always equal quality. Go to any record store...you'll find Train, Nickleback in the dollar or less cut-out bins along with Status Quo. Canada has heaps and heaps of far better artists to be proud of...Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Glenn Gould, Leonard Cohen, Gordon Lightfoot, Harmonium, The Band, Guess Who, Cowboy Junkies, Sarah McLachlan, even April Wine.
  2. If Jimmy was unhappy with the emphasis on keyboards on ITTOD, there was a simple solution...SHOW UP AT THE STUDIO! While Page and Bonham dithered about with their addictions, Plant and Jones were at the studio. What were they supposed to do, twiddle their thumbs? Also, if ITTOD isn't a "fan favorite", as you say, why are "In the Evening", "Fool in the Rain" and "All My Love" some of the most-played Led Zeppelin songs on the radio? Again, I restate my premise: Just because it isn't liked as much as IV or Physical Graffiti doesn't mean ITTOD is disliked/hated.
  3. Egads, what a headache of a thread. I'm glad I missed it the first time around, for it is exactly the type of "apples vs. oranges" debate that serves no purpose. I will say this (even though the poster "producergal" is apparently long gone)...if the only way you can make a case for Jimmy Page is by tearing down Mozart, then that suggests you have very little case at all. I don't care how many musical degrees you possess, reducing Mozart's music to a series of curlicues and devoid of emotion proves only that you either haven't listened to much Mozart beyond "Eine Kliene Nachtmusik" or you have an axe to grind.
  4. Does anyone find it amusing/odd that of all the Anthrax clips people chose to post here, only one is an Anthrax original? All the rest are covers. Are you people suggesting that Anthrax is only good when covering other people's songs? How about "Caught In A Mosh"? "I Am the Law" I don't rank Anthrax quite as high as Slayer and Metallica...but Scott Ian was a cool dude.
  5. Actually, Santana can be wrong...and has been wrong before...e.g. "I'm Winning", hooking up with that Matchbox 20 goof Rob Thomas. Nickelback is shite. But there are plenty of shite bands out there. Train. Slipknot. Good Charlotte. Dawes. Whatever the latest teen-pop boy-band is hot...5 Seconds of Summer seems to be the current flash-in-the-pan. The good thing is that they are all easy to ignore for the most part. They will all be forgotten and rotting in the dustbin of history in due time.
  6. I thought it might be a hoax upon first hearing the news. Very surprised indeed...he was the last guy I would think would kill himself. R.I.P.
  7. :birthday: Happy Birthday Ady!!! Happy Birthday Ddladner!!! May you both celebrate your day in splendid fashion. ROCK ON!
  8. jb126 came up with a great idea: A potted plant to the winner of the pool this year. We're working on the logistics.
  9. Damn, that is sad, Walter. ESPN says the DA is investigating. Apparently there has been a major crash and weirdness in today's race, too. I expect a full play-by-play from you, Walter, our resident racing expert.
  10. Yes, his role as Le Chiffre in the "Casino Royale" remake with Daniel Craig is probably the first exposure many Americans had to Mads Mikkelsen. Ady, those first two Pusher films where he plays Tonny are very good. He also did a terrific job portraying Stravinsky in 2008's "Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky". Also recommended are "Flame & Citron", "Open Hearts", "A Royal Affair", and "Prague"...and any of his early Danish film or television work you can find. Along with Daniel Auteuil, Michel Blanc, and Javier Bardem, Mads Mikkelsen is among my favourite foreign actors of recent vintage.
  11. Got an unexpected birthday package today and my nephew's Pee Wee basketball team got their first victory of the season in nail-biting fashion...and he was named "player of the game".
  12. Mads was great in last year's "The Hunt"...should have received a Best Actor nomination, in my opinion.
  13. I've been discussing Sibelius...Jean Sibelius, with a friend and suggesting some pieces to her by way of introduction to his work. Here are five of the Finnish composer's works that I find particularly fine. Valse Triste Finlandia The Swan of Tuonela http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtNWUw0afqI&feature=youtube_gdata_player Symphony No. 7 Lastly, his dark, brooding masterpiece...Symphony No. 4

    Good!

Whoa...I only just noticed that. Did I miss some fireworks?
  15. For TK's (and yours) sanity, I hope so!
  16. Aye...I see the refs (and Rick) are in midseason form.
  17. Yes, PC, it's the same as our previous pick contests...no need to pick the spread, only the winner. I only included the point spread as a helpful guide to people who don't have time to follow football closely and might wonder what the general consensus was regarding the favourite. It was also my tip of the hat to Brett...it was her interest in point spreads and how to use them that first brought us together.
  18. In memory of our football-loving sister-in-arms, I dedicate this thread to pottedplant. I also think it would be a nice gesture if all of us who participate in the pool pick Brett's beloved New Orleans Saints every week. I intend to do so, but I won't make it mandatory for the rest of you...it's only a suggestion. Here are the opening week's games with the latest Las Vegas Hilton point spreads. Week 1 Thursday, September 4 Green Bay Packers at Seattle Seahawks (-5.5) Sunday, September 7 New Orleans Saints at Atlanta Falcons (-1) Minnesota Vikings at St. Louis Rams (-6.5) Cleveland Browns at Pittsburgh Steelers (-6) Jacksonville Jaguars at Philadelphia Eagles (-11) Oakland Raiders at New York Jets (-5) Cincinnati Bengals at Baltimore Ravens (-2.5) Buffalo Bills at Chicago Bears (-6) Washington Redskins at Houston Texans (-2.5) Tennessee Titans at Kansas City Chiefs (-5.5) New England Patriots (-4) at Miami Dolphins Carolina Panthers at Tampa Bay Bucs (pick 'em) San Francisco 49ers (-5) at Dallas Cowboys Indianapolis Colts at Denver Broncos (-7) Monday, September 8 New York Giants at Detroit Lions (-4) San Diego Chargers at Arizona Cardinals (-3) No rush to get your picks in...just get 'em in before the first game. Good luck.
  19. Welcome to the forum. Yes, the bridge was found...and later sold for scrap metal to China.
  20. Any book by Peter Guralnick is worth checking out...from "Lost Highway" to "Searching for Robert Johnson" to "Last Train to Memphis" to "Dream Boogie". Yeah, I know what you mean. I haven't read "The Goldfinch" yet, either...a cursory glance left me with the impression it was too much like a soap opera. Too many other books vying for my attention...particularly a couple of new spy books: "A Spy Among Friends: Kim Philby and the Great Betrayal" by Ben Macintyre and "The Good Spy: The Life and Death of Robert Ames" by Kai Bird.
