Better than any of the movies at the Oscars this year. From the guy who made "In the Loop", another hilarious black-comedy. I just watched my copy of the DVD last night (yes, I ordered it from sight unseen once I saw who was in it and wrote/directed it from Amazon.co.uk - region-free DVD players rule)! The accents made it even funnier - i.e., not even pretending to fake a Russian one! Who knew Soviet succession could be made into a comedy? (Well, besides Soviet leaders dying from "colds" back in the 70s and 80s...
Kiwi_Zep_Fan87
Finally! After so long, I am getting to relax with a movie this Saturday, as opposed to working even during the weekends!

I loved Jon Hamm in "Mad Men" but his movie roles have been uneven. This one looks interesting and I also enjoy Rosamunde Pilke, so I am hopeful. Strider
I love the month of April. Winter is over and flowers bloom and the annual Noir City Festival hits town. 10 consecutive nights of Film Noir. Opening night Friday the 13th. Saturday the 14th with James Ellroy in person dropping F-bombs and reminiscing about jerking off to Jean Simmons in "Spartacus". Sunday the 15th. Strider
Heading into the final weekend of Noir City Fest. This was the past week's delights. Monday April 16: Charlton Heston's leading-man debut...with the always smoky, sultry Lizabeth Scott. Bulldog Charles McGraw tracks down a robbery in his inimitable fashion. Tuesday the 17: One of the most-influential noirs, thanks to John Alton's incredible shadowy cinematography on location. The final sequence in the L.A. sewers is iconic...and beat "The Third Man"'s underground tunnel sequence by a year. A young Jack Webb steals his scenes as a forensic specialist. It was while filming this movie that Jack Webb got the idea for "Dragnet". Broderick Crawford doing what he does best.
Strider
Wednesday the 18th: Ann Robinson. (she was also in the classic "War of the Worlds") appeared in person on this night for the 1954 film version of "Dragnet". Just the facts, ma'am. Noir stalwart Charles McGraw plays an Inspector Javert-type Insurance Investigator dogging Barry Sullivan and Dorothy Malone. It ends at the same Malibu beach house used in "Kiss Me, Deadly". Thursday the 19: Inspired by the famous Kefauver hearings. Great footage of Angels Flight and Bunker Hill before it was destroyed. This was director Michael Curtiz ("Casablanca", "Mildred Pierce") on the downside of his career. None of the three leads went on to have any kind of career. Tom Tryon was so brutalized by Otto Preminger in his next movie that he gave up acting and became a writer instead. But it does have a Nat "King" Cole scene and a young Elaine Stritch before her Broadway fame. Edited April 20, 2018 by Strider
redrum
"Heading into the final weekend of Noir City Fest." Man, I wish they'd have something like this locally. Charles McGraw is one of my fave actors. Love his gravelly voice.

It's been running every January-February for 16 years now. There are also Noir City Fests now in Boston, Austin, Chicago, Seattle, and coming soon to D.C. http://www.noircity.com/

Strider
Movie round-up. Saw these the week of Memorial Day and D-Day. Anybody who voted for "Shakespeare in Love" over "Saving Private Ryan" deserves to go to prison along with Harvey Weinstein.
Strider
Some cool documentaries. Mr. Rogers was one of my favourite people in the world...and "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" packs an emotional wallop. chef free
Touching tribute to a gentle giant! He always thought of the kids first, what a radical concept, especially the way he took it as far as he could. He was a genius of early childhood development...
