The Love That I Found Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 (edited) Zeppelin was well-balanced in their songs, so more than one member shines on most songs. But sequence a double album that devotes one side to the talents of each member. For example... SIDE ONE (JIMMY) Black Dog (Even though the main idea was Jones, I always think of Page the most when I hear this one) The Song Remains The Same (Bonzo and Plant also shine on this one but it's Jimmy's guitar layerings) Bron-yr-aur Since I've Been Loving You (Jones and Robert shine as well but Page's elegant solos take the cake) SIDE TWO (BONZO) The Wanton Song The Ocean Moby Dick (naturally...) When The Levee Breaks SIDE THREE (JONES) Thank You (this one could fall under Robert as well but I feel Jones' mellotron/organ takes the cake) The Rain Song (it's the piano twinklings and that gorgeous mellotron passage) In The Light SIDE FOUR (ROBERT) Over The Hills And Far Away (love these lyrics) Fool In The Rain (Robert's finest moment lyrically) Stairway To Heaven (Again, the lyrics are so memorable. All the members shine but it's the poetic and whimsical nature of Robert's lines that steals the show for me) And, for a limited time, here is a four track bonus EP... Elixir Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Fun topic idea! I agree with your JB and JPJ songs, except I'd have to throw No Quarter onto JPJ. JP: Difficult to disagree with Song Remains the Same and Since I've Been Loving You. I'd take off Bron-Yr-Aur (which I love) and substitute Friends - love the hoppy beat and the strange tuning. Black Dog is a great riff but since it was indeed JPJ's idea, I'd take it off for Dazed and Confused. RP: Probably the most subjective. Agree with Stairway but I'd sub Kashmir and Immigrant Song. Kashmir has my favorite Zep riff, but I don't think the song gets enough credit for its lyrics. The opening verse is one of the most evocative bits of poetry I've read. And there are so many beautiful lines throughout: the dust that floats high in June, no provision but an open face... Immigrant Song is the best showcase of the mythology/Tolkien Zep songs, maybe because it's a bit tongue-in-cheek without losing its punch. Quote

I went back and forth on whether to include that one or Stairway. You're right that the opening lyrics are especially memorable. "Oh let the sun beat down upon my face, stars to fill my dreams..." might be my favorite individual lyric in a Zeppelin song. Quote
The Love That I Found Posted December 1, 2014 Author Posted December 1, 2014 No Lemon Song for Jonesy? I love The Lemon Song but between the likes of The Rain Song and In The Light, there just wasn't enough room. Quote

Deborah J Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 This is a fun topic. And I have changed my songs so many times since I saw the thread yesterday. And while it is literally impossible as each song has the best 4 musicians...damn this is hard and today this would be mine although ask me next week and a few may change SIDE ONE John Paul Jones No Quarter - IMHO he owns this song! Dazed and Confused - the bass line alone forget about it! Lemon Song In The Light Carouselambra SIDE TWO John Henry Bonham Moby Dick- I for one love a great long drum solo and this one kicks ass! When The Levee Breaks - thank you Headley Grange :-) Bonzo's Montreux Achilles Last Stand The Ocean SIDE THREE Jimmy Page Stairway To Heaven - As long as I breathe this is MY favorite masterpiece. I had to give this one to Jimmy:-) Bron-Yr-Aur - wished this one would have been longer The Song Remains The Same Black Dog Heartbreaker SIDE FOUR Robert Plant Immigrant Song- the notes he hits! Bron-Y-Aur Stomp All My Love - For his son Tea For One That's The Way Bonus: Kashmir- almost put this with Robert then you really cannot pick who is best on this IMHO Rain Song I Can't Quit You Baby Quote

henrybonzo Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 we can apply that to "that's the way" too! does Bonham get Kashmir? plant said he came with the driving beat Quote
The Love That I Found Posted December 5, 2014 Author Posted December 5, 2014 Good point on Going To California. I, too, love the new companion disc where you can really hear the beauty of the song's melody. I suppose Bonzo does get credit for Kashmir but, myself, I still think of it as a "Plant song" first. The lyrics are just so memorable and really describe the setting. Then there's Jones as well, who might contribute most to the actual atmosphere of the song. I guess it's one of those songs where each member can truly lay claim to playing an integral role. Quote
