  1. Just coming out of the Hollywood Palladium show...very good, if a bit shorter than I had hoped, show. Robert was in fine voice...even better than last year I think. Didn't take many photos...but here's the setlist. No Quarter to open the show!
  2. I see now...I overlooked the 'The'.

  4. As far as I know, "Destroyer" has always been used to signify the April 27, 1977 show.
  5. Well, Robert Plant and his band should be in fine spirits for tonight's concert at the Hollywood Palladium. According to my friends around town, Robert and the band spent some time record shopping at Amoeba in Hollywood before going to Barney's Beanery that night and getting hammered.
  6. A few quick thoughts about last night's Dave Rawlings Machine show... Every once in a while you go to a concert at which you feel humbled and privileged to be in attendance. The Dave Rawlings Machine concert last night at Immanuel Presbyterian Church was just such a show. One felt baptized in the purity of bullshit-free musicianship that characterized the evening. No flash, no gimmickry, no ear monitors, no lyric teleprompters. Just five honest-to-goodness musicians who love what they do and have a generosity of spirit towards both the audience and each other. The fact that the concert was a low-key little-publicized gig in a church helped add to the folksy intimate atmosphere. It was far from sold out and I was able to walk up to the church door at a little past 7pm. and buy my ticket...cost $38. It was as if Dave Rawlings had only invited their closest friends for a hootenanny...I estimate the audience at less than 500. These were devoted music fans...fans of traditional folk, blues, Americana, and of all the gathered musicians on stage. Not just casual fans only interested in seeing John Paul Jones. From left to right on the front line was our beloved John Paul Jones on mandolins and FIDDLE!!! (who knew?!?), the Master of Ceremonies Dave Rawlings on acoustic guitar and banjo, the beautiful Gillian Welch (wished she had done more from her excellent "The Harrow and the Harvest" album) on acoustic guitar and harmonica, and the amazing Willie Watson ( a real treat for us long-time fans of the Old Crow Medicine Show...his new solo album "Folk Singer, Vol. 1" is a must) on acoustic guitar, banjo, fiddle and harmonica. Behind them was Paul Kowert on standup bass. Everybody took a turn on vocals and lent a hand on backing vocals...even Jonesy. They played an assortment of traditional folk standards such as "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" and "This Land Is Your Land" and some Gillian Welch originals. And they played five KILLER covers towards the end of the show: Led Zeppelin's "Going to California" Bright Eyes "Method Acting" Neil Young's "Cortez the Killer" Bob Dylan's "Queen Jane Approximately" The Band's "The Weight" There were two sets with about a 20-minute intermission in between. They began at 8:10 and finished up around 10:45...over two solid hours of music. The sound and the acoustics of the venue were impeccable. Even though Robert Plant was in town, I don't think he was at the show...at least not visibly and no guest appearance during "Going to California" as I had hoped.. This was the last date of the tour and you could tell they were giving it a little extra juice and having a blast up on stage knowing it was the last night. The intricate acoustic filagrees that Dave and John Paul were weaving all through the night were spellbinding. Here's hoping they do another tour soon and you get a chance to see them. I was able to quietly and unobtrusively take a few photos of the show...I'll post them later. Now, I have work and a Robert Plant concert to get ready for. Here is the setlist from last night: First Set Monkey And The Engineer Going Down the Road Feeling Bad Dry Bones ([traditional] cover) Wayside/Back in Time (Gillian Welch cover) As I Went Out One Morning (Bob Dylan cover) Keep It Clean (Charley Jordan cover) Bells of Harlem It's Too Easy Second Set Ruby Will the Circle Be Unbroken ([traditional] cover) He Will Set Your Fields on Fire (Bill Monroe cover) Sweet Tooth I Hear Them All / This Land Is Your Land (Woody Guthrie cover) Stewball ([traditional] cover) Method Acting / Cortez the Killer Queen Jane Approximately (Bob Dylan cover) Encore: Going to California (Led Zeppelin cover) Look at Miss Ohio (Gillian Welch cover) The Weight (The Band cover) Encore 2: Didn't Leave Nobody but the Baby
  7. Sorry folks, I was in such a rush to get to the concert I left my sheets at work so I won't be able to post the updated season standings until later. But here is the Week 6 schedule of games for those that can't wait to make their picks...like paul. Week 6 Schedule Thursday Indianapolis @ Houston Sunday Chicago @ Atlanta Jacksonville @ Tennessee Baltimore @ Tampa Bay Denver @ New York Jets Detroit @ Minnesota New England @ Buffalo Carolina @ Cincinnati Pittsburgh @ Cleveland Green Bay @ Miami San Diego @ Oakland Dallas @ Seattle Washington @ Arizona New York Giants @ Philadelphia Monday San Francisco @ St. Louis
  8. If you get to the Palladium box office early enough today before the show, they usually release a few tickets at face value before the show. Hell, this show didn't sell out until last week...it was nearly a month after tickets went on sale before I bought mine. $53 is the face value price. Good luck.
  9. I just came back from a long vacation as well as taking time off twice earlier this year. Plus we're now shorthanded at one of my jobs thanks to a guy going cuckoo...so no can do, unfortunately. Look forward to hearing your reports as to what I can expect Nov. 12.
  10. Who is your goalie now that Miller is gone? Where did Miller go again? I know it wasn't to the Ducks as you feared.
  11. USC's season is pretty much ruined. It was already dire after the Boston College loss, but losing to ASU on a Hail-Mary heave at the last second is the crusher. Two losses will not get the Trojans in the top bowls. It's lower-tier bowl if they're lucky.
  12. Wait a minute...I thought last season was for tanking? You mean to tell me you expect the Sabres to tank two years in a row? I thought you were crowing last year about all the draft picks Buffalo had accumulated...just how many cotton-picking draft picks do your bums need to rebuild? Maybe they can tank next year too and get even more top draft picks. There's only so much intentional tanking a fan can take. Just tell me when you expect the Buffalo Sabres to actually try to win.
  13. Well, it would have been sweeter to be able to go to the NYC event so I could meet all of you...but at my age, I'll take what I can get. Thank you, Jimmy Page, for coming to my backyard!
  14. Sorry Deb...suffered a hangover from my brothers' birthday party the other night and forgot to log on to wish you a happy birthday yesterday. Belated birthday wishes to you, kind soul. Hope it was a good one! Happy birthday wishes today to badgeholder, pottedplant and ledzepfvr! Many happy returns of the day to you all! Rock on!
  15. Since EVERYONE has Seattle in tonight's game, the winners of the week are locked in stone...Anjin-san and mack! Congratulations guys! They are tied at 12-2. Depending on tonight's game, they will either finish 13-2 or 12-3. I'll post all the numbers tonight after the John Paul Jones concert.
  16. Like one of those old riverboats you'd see paddling down the Mississippi in Mark Twain's days? The kind with casino gambling? Hope you had a good trip up and down the river. Nothing but work today. 10am-5pm at one job and then 6pm-12:30am at the other. Holiday is definitely o-v-e-r.
  17. Jennifer Lawrence. Unfortunately.
  18. It's all good fellas. Don't sweat the rest of your picks until this weekend. I know firsthand how time slips away.
  19. Let's see if I can at least break .500 this week. Oy vey. Week 5 picks: Green Bay Carolina Detroit Dallas Indianapolis Philadelphia Tennessee Jacksonville New Orleans NY Giants Denver San Diego San Francisco New England Seattle
  20. The entire train scene from the time they meet in the dining car to the sleeper car pas de deux between Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint is one of the classily seductive and dare I say it, EROTIC, scenes in cinema history. Throw in James Mason and Martin Landau as a devilish pair of smooth criminals and you have one of the classic movie thrillers ever. First-rate entertainment from beginning to end.
  21. I have done the EMP and Jimi Hendrix landmarks on previous visits so I skipped it this time. This was mostly a family visit or I might have PMed you to see if you were up for a drink.
  22. Edgewater Inn...check. Bruce Lee...check. Also on my list of objectives for my day in Seattle was checking out some local Nirvana landmarks. The Central Tavern on First Ave. where Nirvana played their fitst Seattle gig in April 1988. The Paramount Theatre on Pine St. where Nirvana played a legendary Halloween show on October 31, 1991. Of course, a visit to the Kurt Cobain Memorial Bench in Viretta Park, next to the Kurt & Courtney house on Lake Washington. Appropriately it was raining most of the time.
  23. While in Seattle yesterday I paid my respects at the Bruce Lee and Brandon Lee gravesites at Lake View Cemetery.
