  1. On the Lucinda tip, her sometime collaborator Gurf Morlix will be debuting a documentary about Blaze Foley (who Lucinda sings about on "Drunken Angel" from Car Wheels On A Gravel Road) called Duct Tape Messiah on his current tour. For Gurf's tour dates, check here. For more on the movie, check here.
  2. I have no idea what their "best" disc is but my favorite one is probably Women & Children First. I started to lose interest around the time of Fair Warning and had lost just about all interest by the time of 1984. That said, I think each of their albums have something worthy to offer. Diver Down catches a lot of flack but it's really not a bad album, in spite of all the covers. Yeah, it's a little poppy in places but it also some very redeeming moments in songs like "Little Guitars" and "The Full Bug". I've only seen them live twice, both times with Dave in Raleigh. The first was at Carter-Finley Stadium in '79 on a bill with Poco, Boston and the Outlaws and again in 2008 at the RBC Center. There were flaws at both shows but the main thing that came across is how they know how to put on a rock show. Arena rock has it's downside but when you have Diamond Dave at the forefront it's very clear from the get-go that he's a very consummate showman that knows just how to work a crowd. He's lost none of his touch in that area. However, I do wish Edward would just go ahead and suck it in and allow Michael Anthony back into the band. I'm sure Dave is no walk in the park but it's Edward that comes across as the real asshole of the group after all of these years.
  3. Most folks are probably more familiar with Willie Nelson & Merle Haggard's version of Townes' "Pancho & Lefty": Townes is more well known as a songwriter than a performer, tons of artists have recorded his material over the years including Robert Plant who included a Townes song on each of his past two records ("Nothin'" from Raising Sand & "Harm's Swift Way" from Band of Joy). Sadly, Townes died on New Year's Day 1997 after years of alcohol and substance abuse. If you're interested in learning more about him I highly recommend the Heartworn Highways documentary (which also covers other singer/songwriters such as Steve Earle, Steve Young [probably best known for "Seven Bridges Road"], Guy Clark, Charlie Daniels and Guy Clark). Also well worth viewing is the documentary on Townes himself called Be Here To Love Me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLWo0oyDp1A
  4. A friend of mine has been touting those Proper box sets for years but I've yet to pick up one. Looks like I need to change that.
  5. From the CNN Wire Staff Jimmy Buffett is 'stable' after stage fall, hospital says January 26, 2011 12:40 p.m. EST Sydney, Australia (CNN) -- Singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett fell off a concert stage during a show in Sydney, Australia Wednesday, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Doctors at Sydney's St. Vincent's Hospital listed Buffett, 64, in stable condition four hours after he was admitted, spokeswoman Denise Coughlan said. She would not give details about his injuries. Australia's Daily Telegraph newspaper quotes witnesses saying Buffett fell from the Hordern Pavilion stage after singing "It's been a lovely cruise, I'm sorry it's ended." Jimmy Buffett and his Coral Reefer Band have performed several sold-out shows in Sydney over the past week, the newspaper reported.
  6. From Nashville.com: Charlie Louvin 1927-2011 Our condolences go out to the family of Charlie Louvin who lost a hard fought battle with pancreatic cancer last night. Born Charles Elzer Loudermilk, Charlie began singing professionally with his brother Ira as a teenager on local radio in Chattanooga, Tennessee. They sang traditional and gospel music in the harmony style they had learned while performing in their church’s choir. Charlie and Ira became Grand Ole Opry members in 1955 and were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001.
  7. From RollingStone.com: Van Halen Working On New Album With David Lee Roth Original frontman's first LP with the band in 27 years Jeffrey Ufberg/WireImage By Matthew Perpetua JANUARY 24, 2011 Van Halen have entered the studio to record their first album in 27 years with original frontman David Lee Roth. Though no official announcement has been made, producer John Shanks tweeted about starting the project last week and shared a photograph of Eddie Van Halen's distinctive guitar amp. Shanks, who has recorded albums with Bon Jovi, Jane's Addiction and Fleetwood Mac, had been rumored as the producer for the new album for some time. Besides contributing two tracks to the band's 1996 Greatest Hits album, this will be Roth's first appearance on a Van Halen record since 1984 (released in January 1984). Still, it will not be a full-on band reunion. Roth-era bassist Michael Anthony is still absent from the group, and was replaced by Eddie's 19-year-old son Wolfgang Van Halen around the time Roth rejoined the band in 2007.
  8. From The Guardian: Former Led Zeppelin singer to lead band away from cover versions and begin working on own songs Sean Michaels guardian.co.uk Tuesday 25 January 2011 Ode to Joy ... Robert Plant performing in Toronto, Canada earlier this month. Photograph: George Pimentel/WireImage After years of playing covers, Robert Plant is to begin writing original songs with the Band of Joy. Following the group's recent album, which included songs by Richard Thompson, Low and Townes Van Zandt, Band of Joy "have to write" their own tunes, Plant said in a new interview. "It's all very well celebrating other people's songwriting," the singer told the Pulse of Radio (via Blabbermouth), "and I know there are other artists who have had an entire career [playing covers] – whether it be Elvis or Sinatra, or a lot of the country artists who never write. But we've got to be heading that way soon." Plant first formed the Band of Joy in the late-60s, before co-founding Led Zeppelin. Although members of the group released records in 1978 and 1983, Plant had already quit by that point; his first release under the Band of Joy name was last year. Hailed as a clean break from both Led Zeppelin and Plant's collaboration with Alison Krauss, the LP consisted solely of covers, including traditionals. Plant's most recent original material appeared on 2005's Mighty Rearranger album. Despite Plant's writing plans, the Band of Joy's recent tour dates have featured new covers of songs including Led Zeppelin's Ramble On and Tangerine, and Lightnin' Hopkins's Central Two-o-Nine. The group's current lineup includes Patty Griffin, Byron House, Marco Giovino and co-producer Buddy Miller.
  9. I didn't really lose interest until around the time of Fair Warning but I think those first three records are pretty good, especially Women and Children First which on most days is my favorite.
  10. Thanks for that. I'm looking forward to the show here in a couple of weeks. Luther was on fire with the Black Crowes this past summer.
  11. Agreed. I wasn't much of a fan at first but I got into them a little more with each new album. By the time of Synchronicity I was really into them and hoping to catch their show in Greensboro but none of my lame ass friends wanted to go so I passed. I wish now that I had gone. I did catch a show on their reunion tour a couple of years ago which was good but not quite the same. No matter, Stewart Copeland is still a madman on the drums.
  12. I hope you enjoy it, it's a great record.
  13. I usually pass on these sort of packagings of previously released material, particularly when they don't appear to be authorized releases but after doing a little research on this one, I picked it up. What got my interest were several songs from a now out of print live album. I already own the rest of the songs on the record but at only $7.99 for the entire CD it was definitely worth the investment. I just wish they'd release that old live record on CD at long last.
  14. I would most definitely consider her country but I wouldn't confuse her with any of the shit you see on CMT or hear on commercial country music radio. She was a guest on NPR's Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me this past weekend and as part of her introduction the host said, "if Taylor Swift were to record a Lucinda Williams song she'd burst into flames". Lucinda's the real deal which is why you're never hear her on commercial country radio stations. By the way, the album "Can't Let Go" comes from is probably her finest record to date, Car Wheels On A Gravel Road. Very highly recommended.
  15. They used to be a part of the site but when it was redesigned around the time the site became "official", the lyrics went missing. I'm not sure what the reasoning was behind that.
  16. All I ever did was try to be helpful. For that I got you going into several threads only to bad mouth me and derailing the threads to boot. So, if I'm not forgiving you'll know why you motherfucking asshole.
  17. I thought Page had it recalled because of the dubbed in audience noise which was taken from a sound effects record. I found a copy back in the 70s in the budget bin at Woolworth's. Any thoughts on this two disc collection? I have plenty of vintage Yardbirds on vinyl but none on CD so this record looks like it might be a nice way to fill that gap.
  18. When and if it ever comes out (it's due on DVD later this year), be sure to check the Geoff Edgers documentary Do It Again: One Man's Quest to Reunite the Kinks. In it, Edgers asks each of the people he interviews to sit in with him on a Kinks song. After his interview with Sting, Sting is unable to stop and just goes nuts on guitar. It's very clear he's a huge Kinks fan. Seeing Sting turn into a geeky teenager who's crazy about the Kinks made me forget all about the image the general public has of him as a pretentious twat. Not that he's never been guilty of that but it was reassuring to see this side of him.
  19. Just to clarify, I think I'm been misunderstood here more than once on recent occasions. I'm not really trying to "get" you (or anybody for that matter) I just thought it was something worth noting. I've definitely posted some songs in this thread that don't technically qualify as "One Hit Wonders" but as I've mentioned, some artists have released songs to try to capitalize on the success of that one big hit and failed. They might have even had some songs before their one big hit (that earned them "one hit wonder" status). When that's the case (before after their big hit), I've at least tried to make mention of it so folks are aware that I also know it's not technically a "One Hit Wonder". In the case of an artist that's has a string of hits, I'll just post those clips in the YouTube thread so there's no confustion. That was definitely inescapable on the airwaves back in the day just like "Seasons In the Sun", another one hit wonder. Waylon Jennings did do a pretty good cover of "Chevy Van" though.
  20. I wouldn't rely on Circus to be accurate about most anything. Yeah, there were some good articles in there from time to time but for the most part they were a prime example of yellow journalism of rock.
  21. Isn't "hypothetical" the key word here? It's not like these questions are actually being posed to Jimmy Page. Given that, it's pretty much an exercise in futility.
