kashmiran Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 (edited) --This should probably be pinned so no more "best setlist" or "ideal setlist" posts crop up-- Just list what you think is their best setlist and follow it up what with what you think an ideal setlist wouldve been. Mine: Knebworth (4th) is their best setlist IMO. For newbies, that consisted of: 1. The Song Remains the Same 2. Celebration Day 3. Black Dog 4. Nobody's Fault but Mine 5. Over the Hills and Far Away 6. Misty Mountain Hop 7. Since I've Been Loving You 8. No Quarter 9. Ten Years Gone (BEST VERSION KNOWN TO MAN IMHO) 10. Hot Dog 11. The Rain Song 12. White Summer / Black Mountain Side 13. Kashmir 14 Trampled Under Foot 15. Sick Again 16. Achilles Last Stand 17. Guitar Solo / Noise Solo / In the Evening 18. Stairway to Heaven 19 Rock and Roll (1st Encore) 20. Whole Lotta Love (2nd Encore) 21. Heartbreaker (3rd Encore) No Dazed, CB, or Moby sadly but its still the best running order in all of Zep... (although CB was done the second week anyway) My IDEAL ZeppList: 1. Immigrant Song 2. Celebration Day 3. Black Dog (w/ "Out on the Tiles" intro, BIOH sucked as an intro riff for this) 4. Over the Hills and Far Away 5. When the Levee Breaks (Note: I'm playing fast-and-loose with what they can actually do live) 6. The Rover (FULL-LENGTH) 7. Sick Again 8. Since I've Been Loving You 9. No Quarter 10. Dancing Days 11. What is and What Should Never Be 12. The Song Remains the Same 13. The Rain Song 14. White Summer / Black Mountain Side 15. Going to California 16. That's the Way 17. Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp 18. Babe I'm Gonna Leave You 19. Trampled Under Foot 20. Hot Dog 21. All My Love 22. In the Evening 23. Nobody's Fault But Mine 24. Ten Years Gone 25. Kashmir 26. Achilles Last Stand 27. Dazed and Confused 28. Stairway to Heaven ENCORES: Rock and Roll Heartbreaker Night Flight The Ocean Whole Lotta Love Communication Breakdown Bring it on Home (and when the crowd STILL wants more and is screaming "MORE ZEPP, MORE ZEPP!!!!"): We're Gonna Groove / I Can't Quit You Baby (and after Robert says "Goodnight, (whatever city)!" and the crowd riots): ROBERT: "Thank you very very much, yes thank you...Alright well, unfortunately we've gotta leave you, but we'll play one more...I don't think we've done this in about, eh, (*lets say this is 75*) five years I think..." Jimmy tunes up and then they play: Somethin' Else ----AND THEN THE CROWD FINALLY LETS THEM LEAVE BECAUSE THEY HAVE ALL FAINTED DUE TO THE RAW MUSICAL FORCES AT WORK---- I think I had WAAAAY too much fun writing that second half (my "ideal" setlist pushes five hours *without* banter from Robert...) But let's see if anyone can come up with a better setlist (preferably a more realistic one) Edited to say please forgive my ridiculousness writing those last two encores, (especially that "RAW MUSICAL FORCES" bit, it's 12:23 and I cant think straight, sorry. 1998giventofly Posted September 28, 2019 Posted September 28, 2019 The 71/72 setlists and performances are my personal favorites; so putting together a vaguely realistic setlist, here's my idea of a perfect show: 1.) Immigrant Song 2.) Heartbreaker 3.) Black Dog 4.) Over The Hills And Far Away 5.) Misty Mountain Hop 6.) Since I've Been Loving You 7.) No Quarter 8.) The Song Remains The Same 9.) The Rain Song 10.) Stairway to Heaven 11.) Tangerine (Electric version, like Earl's Court) 12.) Hey Hey What Can I Do (Electric again, like Tangerine) 13.) Ten Years Gone 14.) Going To California 15.) That's The Way 16.) Dazed and Confused 17.) The Ocean 18.) Houses Of The Holy 19.) Whole Lotta Love 20.) Mellotron Solo/Thank You 21.) When The Levee Breaks 22.) Bring It On Home Pair this with a Japan 71 caliber performance from all four members and it's possible this becomes the greatest show they ever played Quote
Sticks of Fire Posted September 29, 2019 Posted September 29, 2019 (edited) They should have mixed up the set lists from night to night. If not completely different from night to night maybe include some set list anchors to keep things a little consistent but swap out lots of songs especially when doing 2, 3, 4 and 5 night runs. I struggle with this thought all the time. I love The Grateful Dead and at times wish Zeppelin would have used a similar model live. But doing so also involved taking huge risks with the performance. At the end of the day I'll take the difference in Zeppelin sets during the Whole Lotta Love or How Many More Times medleys. That part of the show got switched up quite frequently during the early days and resulted in some amazing stuff. Edited October 1, 2019 by The Only Way To Fly Quote
June72 Posted October 1, 2019 Posted October 1, 2019 imo the best set of their career is Seattle '72. 1. Immigrant Song -> 2. Heartbreaker 3. Black Dog 4. The Ocean (debut) 5. Since I've Been Loving You 6. Stairway to Heaven 7. Going to California 8. Black Country Woman (impromptu - debut) 9. That's the Way 10. Tangerine 11. Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp 12. Dazed and Confused (Snippets incl. Walter's Walk and The Crunge) 13. What Is and What Should Never Be 14. Dancing Days 15. Moby Dick 16. Whole Lotta Love (Medley incl. Boogie Chillen', Let's Have a Party, Hello Mary Lou, Only the Lonely, Heartbreak Hotel, Going Down Slow) Encores: 17. Rock and Roll Encore 2: 18. Organ Solo (Snippets incl. Amazing Grace, Everyday People, Medley incl. Louie Louie, Let's Dance) -> 19. Thank You Encore 3: 20. Money (That's What I Want) (possibly leaving the stage again) 21. Over the Hills and Far Away (debut) 22. Dancing Days (2nd performance) Just what a fuckin' marathon. It's also worth mentioning that every song in the organ solo medley and Money was also played for the first time ever that night. It's almost impossible to discuss ideal setlists without going tour by tour, but let's take the '77 set and tweak it a bit... 1. The Song Remains the Same -> 2. Sick Again -> 3. The Rover: no clue why they never gave this one a full go... Robert's voice surely could've handled it by '77 4. Nobody's Fault But Mine 5. Alternating: In My Time of Dying (with You Shook Me snippet) and Since I've Been Loving You 6. No Quarter 7. Ten Years Gone -> (I think this transition could've be really fuckin cool) 8. The Rain Song 9. Going to California 10. Black Country Woman (abridged) -> 11. Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp (w/ the occasional Dancing Days snippet) 12. Over the Top (but let's cut it 15 minutes) 13. White Summer/Black Mountain Side -> 14. Kashmir 15. Alternating: Over the Hills and Far Away and Trampled Under Foot 16. Noise Solo (cut it at 10 minutes) 17. Achilles Last Stand 18. Stairway to Heaven Encores: 20. Whole Lotta Love -> 21. Alternating: Communication Breakdown, Black Dog, Rock and Roll, The Ocean Quote
