I watched this a couple weeks ago when I was searching for some Jean-Paul Belmondo films on my streaming apps and could not find them. In frustration, I remembered I had seen "Only Lovers Left Alive" listed on my Prime Video and said "Fuck it, I'll just watch "Only Lovers Left Alive" again. It is one of my favourite Jarmusch films along with "Mystery Train" and "Ghost Dog". I love the eerie late-night shots of Detroit. And yes, Tilda is amazing (although she is disconcertingly beginning to look like Thom Yorke). R.I.P. Anton Yelchin. Strider
Celebrated the centennial birthday of Deborah Kerr last night. My Kerr-athon started at 9pm with "Black Narcissus" and ended sometime around 5am with "The Grass is Greener". Two of my favourite Kerr roles are as nuns…Sister Clodagh in "Black Narcissus" (1947) and Sister Angela in "Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison" (1957). I love Audrey Hepburn in "The Nun's Story" and there have been many other nuns in movies that were great. But, in my eyes, Deborah Kerr was the greatest nun in cinema. Strider
A wild "train theme" double-bill last night at the American Cinematheque. "Runaway Train" still holds up as one of the best action movies of the 1980s. Jon Voight is terrific and you can see that Tom Hanks stole his Forrest Gump voice from Eric Roberts's character. "Trans-Europe Express" is slightly more comprehensible and easy to follow than Robbe-Grillet's earlier "Last Year at Marienbad". And Marie-France Pisier is hot….whether in chains or not. redrum
Was talking about this the other day in a runaway SF cable car thread. Roberts was great in the remake of 'In Cold Blood.'

Strider
This really cheered me up after the Dodgers loss last night. Yul Brynner willl always OWN this role. Deborah Kerr and Rita Moreno are delightful as ever. I consider the Rodgers & Hammerstein score one of their best. Majestic and sumptious, with nearly every song a classic. And that "Small House of Uncle Thomas" ballet scene…WOW! Superb! It completely made me forget about Dave Roberts bungling another Dodgers playoff run…well, almost. Strider
"Wildflowers" is my favourite Tom Petty album. So this was mandatory viewing for me…especially in a theatre with the sound cranked. Saw it at the Laemmle NoHo 7 last night and they had the sound nice and loud. They showed the video for "Something Could Happen" and a bunch of videotaped birthday wishes for Tom before the documentary. Tears were cried. Too bad it was only shown in theatres for two days. RainbowElf
Watched the new Halloween movie Halloween Kills, and thought it was stupid. Wonder what Halloween Ends will be like? Also watched The Many Saints of Newark, my beloved hometown and am still wondering what David Chase was thinking.
redrum
I've watched many, many, many movies in my lifetime, but I have to say that I believe that 'Seven Samurai' is the greatest film ever made. It has everything: Joy, sorrow, comedy, love, hate, sex (though not graphic), great acting (Mifune is brilliant), photography, lighting, sound (just the sound of the horses hooves is amazing), dialogue, location, etc. I have to get my own copy. Strider
Finally went out to see the new Bond movie "No Time to Die". Daniel Craig's final outing as James Bond. The title could have been "James Bond: This Time It's Personal". I enjoyed it for the most part, but won't say much more about it because I don't want to give away spoilers for those who have not seen the movie yet. But three names in the closing credits caught my eye…Jason Bonham, Johnny Marr, and Arturo Sandoval were some of the musicians Hans Zimmer used for the score. 1975NQ
In keeping with Halloween festivities, watched Salem's Lot last weekend - introduced it to my girlfriend. Yes, it's bad, but I'm a huge James Mason fan and he's great in this. Like all the best actors, he just kept getting better with age. 1975NQ
We also watched the original Amityville Horror the same night, and I'm convinced the black dog in that movie ("Harry the dog") is the same one from Salem's Lot, which was filmed in the same era (78-79). I hunted around for an image for the dog from Salem's Lot, but couldn't find one. This is him from Amityville. Take a bow, Harry.

Strider
Finally went to see this documentary on the Velvet Underground. Good but could have been better. With all of the cameras around Andy Warhol's Factory it is a shocking shame that there is no complete visual and audio recording of the Velvet Underground in concert at that time. All we have are silent film snippets and bootleg audio tapes. Saw the Robert De Niro double-feature at the American Cinematheque Saturday. "Taxi Driver" I have seen many, many times since it was released 45 years ago in 1976. But 1970's "Hi, Mom!" was entirely new to me. Interesting to think that Brian De Palma discovered De Niro long before Scorsese did, using him in three movies before "Mean Streets" was even made. But the real eye-opener about "Hi, Mom!" are the "Be Black, Baby" guerilla theatre sequences.
