Current state of Airlines...

I was just reading an article about how the cost of oil is spiking the fees for airlines through the roof. Are Airlines as we know it on the endangered list?

With large ticket costs and fees for extra luggage, how long until every airline goes under?

Discuss...

Well it'll be the usual: jobs cuts, maintenance cuts, surcharges. In fact Qantas, the Australian Airline, is cutting back on its routes. They no longer fly the Australia-Japan routes now. They've left that to the low-cost carrier Jet Star.

I think Airlines are heading in two directions:

You have the rapid expansion in low-cost carriers and also a push from the more established full-service airlines to capture the business travel market.

So I think the trunk carriers will be the low-cost airlines who will handle the majority of the domestic and international leisure/miscellanous travel. Those flights will probably be service-free, and probably will cut down on the number of cabin crew.

And i think the more established airlines like Qantas, Lufthansa, KLM, JAL etc will probably down-size and specialise more in the business market.

The other possible move is that Airlines will put a lot of their emphasis on the new generation aircraft such as the Airbus A380, even for short-haul operations, and have a large lower deck class without service for low-cost economy passengers, then have a full-service upper deck for business passengers, thereby cutting down on aircraft numbers and operating costs.

WEll, given that I live in the Western US and the US is a large place, I really don't think that the airlines will lose too much business. Even if the prices are expensive.

I am not a big flyer--I've been on trips that I've traveled via plane on four separate trips.

I'm planning on going to the east coast this summer, and I've weighed the benefits and downfalls of flying and driving. In order for me to drive my car from Idaho to my destination, it will cost me more money in oil changes, gas and lodging in between days (my drive would be an estimated 40 hours and I'm by myself) that it would be cheaper to fly.

Well they probably won't lose business, especially business-travel business, but it will impact on the tourism market, and a lot of places are dependent on tourism and a jump in fuel prices can add hundreds of millions to an airline's operating costs, then you have the old situation where airlines like Pan Am were still operating services but were losing $2m a day or something like that

I'm one tom cat in heat over these price hikes. Wait, tom cats don't get in heat. Ok then, I'm knocking over garbage cans in protest. If you ever see your can turned over for no reason you will know why. It's affecting a vacation dramatically. Well airline costs and control freaks!

I'm just mad at fuel in general. I can't go to my favorite music store anymore because it's too far away, and that sucks that it's messing up everybody's vacation plans. And god, like we're not being ripped off in most areas of our lives already! If I didn't feel so comprehensively cheated, I might not be in such a huff, but it seems like we're paying through the nose for everything and not getting much in return.

Boink: Yeah, us too. To refill my saucer to return to Planet Boink is too expensive. I wouldn't be able to feed Splits.

Splits: Not feed me? Awwww man you alien freak, I lick your toes. On Boink that would cost you 5000 boinkpence.

Boink: Freak? Lick more I know you love the kinky way of life...

Splits: Mmmmmm, sniff toes, lick lick, turn red run hide. What planet did we land on anyways?

Boink: Bitch I dunno, but these people still type to communicate.

Splits: Very sad, very sad...where's my chow chow chow.

Boink: Ok, I will feed you, we will delay returning until we teach these persons alternate forms of energy will make their countries rich ok?

Splits: Munch, much munchie, I love you Boinkers.

Boink: Awww, me too enjoy lil canine. You won't go hungry and we will adopt a few too :)

Cheap airline tickets to continental Europe with companies like Easyjet or Flybe are still flourishing. You can get some pretty good deals.

After factoring conversions? I will vacation here if at all. I know when I'm being reamed.

It's very hard to justify paying so much to travel, now - and still do the other things like treating people to dinner or activities. We'll be passing on invitations to Colorado and Florida, and I suppose the time share in St. Thomas will go unused another year. More steak and lobster will be served at home, however...

I dont know how this makes sense, but my grandma told me that you should wait to book after midnight b/c they are lower then....

i checked earlier today, delta, nyc to austin in late august, 318. I just checked again now, closer to 11pm, and they are 298.

If Im awake in an hour, I'll check this theory out some more.

If you can book middle of the week departing and returning this will also help.

Haven't flown since 9-11. Never was my preferred mode of travel anyway.

"No matter....no distance...it's the ride."

The worst thing you can do is let terrorists make you a coward. I love to fly too though :)
