BEST LIVE VERSION OF OVER THE HILLS AND FAR AWAY?

the issue i have with the later versions is not just that he sang lower, but that he changed the melody, and it just sounds bad. its actually hard for me to listen to those later performances.

The band had to restructure the song chords since it was impossible for Robert to hit the high vocal ranges. When you think about it, considering the operation that Robert had that would effect his high vocal ranges, he had no choice but to lower his vocal ranges. ROCK ON!

I enjoy the later performances more, personally. Instead of screaming and wailing like a banshee, he actually sings it. Some songs are better with his banshee-voice, don't get me wrong. R&R, STH, WLL, all better before '73. But OTHAFA is better lower, IMHO.

well i guess that's what it is about music, people have different tastes. for me, in a lot of the '75 performances i wouldn't even consider what Robert does "singing", but if you see it differently that's ok. and i don't want to rip on robert because it's not his fault, he's still my absolute favorite singer of all time.

SO much controversy me gonna cause...! :o

As we all agree on opinions vary wildly...

For me Plants singing was at its best on the 75 shows minnus the disaterous bouts of flu shows.

MSG 12.2 Over the hills suffers with the croaks but Jimmy pulls out what could be argued a top 3 solo.

I fookin love 24.3 LA Forum version.

Its much more about the solo than the voice for me.

Vienna 73

21ST&27TH 77 get honourable mentions as well.

Theres soooooo many!!!!!

I actually listened to "For Badgeholders Only" from 21 June 1977 yesterday and it sounded great. I especially love the way they performed "Kashmir." I attended The Forum show from 23 June 1977 and from what I can remember (Give or take a brain cell), it was the greatest concert that I ever saw in my whole life. I also saw the Oakland Coliseum concert on 23 July 1977, however, sadly, it does not live up to any of The Forum shows. I still love the Oakland show though. ROCK ON!

I like 6-21-77 best also, I need to get another copy of 6-23 so I can't recall that version. 6-21 is just the ultimate even with Robert taking the low notes his voice is still much better than 75' The solo/jam in this song is unreal.Jones/Bonham/Jimmy. And I love that distorted slide Jimmy does at the very end. About 72 and 73 versions I don't think I liked the solos as much then.

Its tough do you go for the great vocals of the 72 versions, the amazing solos of the 73 versions, or maybe the longer 75 versions? Tough call. The only 77 version I really like is from LTTE and thats mainly because Bonzo's drumming is so damn good.

For me, its either the 6/25/72 version or possibly one from the German shows in 73 where Jimmy was just on fire and his guitar tone was great as well.

I assume you've heard the 6/23/77 version, but I would check out 6/22/77 and 6/27/77, especially 6/22. I don't typically like the '77 versions the best either, but those two are among my favorite versions.

Missed this thread the first time around, which is just as well for I was spared the idiocy of some former members.

Much debate over the issue of Robert's voice and the way he changed the vocal melody line. To me, if the band was blazing it more than made up for the lack of Robert singing the high notes. 1973 and the first leg of 1975 is the worst of Robert's vocal struggles. 1972 has Robert singing the original melody line and lyrics, but the band doesn't play it with the full force and confidence it would later on. Jimmy especially takes a while to figure out what to do with the solo and the end.

That's why I am partial to many of the 1977 performances. By this time, Robert's voice had recovered most of its power and the band was kicking ass during the jam. With the effect Jimmy used on the '77 tour, his solos were truly over the hills and far away...far away into outer space.

What is interesting in reading the earlier posts about Robert's voice or lack of voice, is that among all the bitching about changing the melody line, NOT ONE PERSON mentions what I find even more puzzling: Robert completely dropping the first line of the song "Many have I loved..."! What was up with that? It sounds silly when he essentially sings the second verse twice.

The allowances he made for the vocal cord surgery and the flu he had I could understand. But his utter disregard for his own lyrics was sometimes appalling.

Of the 111 listed here, I only have 60, and of those 60, the one from June 22, 1977 is my favourite. Followed closely by the other LA Forum ones, 6.14.77 MSG, 3.24.73 Offenburg, 3.4.75 Dallas, 2.12.75 MSG, 3.12.75, 6.28.72 Tuscon...and a few others that I cannot recall at the moment.

If they wanted me to hear those performances they wouldn't be bootlegged.

This statement makes no sense at all.

I like the '77 versions for the reasons you mentioned, but Jones' Alembic (spelling?) bugs me. That's why I tend to prefer the '75 versions, that being said, I have a hard time ranking one above 6/22/77-were you at that show? Which shows did you go to?

And I had never noticed that about Robert skipping the first line until you mentioned it, now it really bugs me...thanks for ruining it for me lol

Im gonna go with the one ive listened to the most again, dallas 75. The cds from the 90s with the 77 tour photos for covers. Im probably only familiar with 7 or 8 others, but i like the loose framework of thyr 75 sound with this riff and the heavy jam section. I will always keep complaining about how good more material would have sounded in 75 tour, especially stuff off physical graffiti which would have sounded great, loose and sloppy. Rover, custard pie, night flight, wanton song....i use the sound of over the hills75 for example of how good those songs would have been...with rougher sound.

No, I wan't at the June 22, '77 show. It figures the one Forum show I miss and it turned out to be one of the better ones of the week.

I didn't care for the Alembic bass, either, but it didn't sound as bad on "Over the Hills..." as it did on TSRTS. Maybe it was because the guys at the soundboard had figured out how to reduce the twang by the fourth song of the set.

Wow, that's some list you've got there! I'm sure I don't need to tell you how blessed you are and how envious I am!

Yea, too bad you missed the 22nd, would've been a fantastic show for you and would be nice for us to be able to ask you what it sounded like in good sound quality lol

Do you have a favorite(s) of the shows you saw or is that like a parent choosing a favorite child?

No need to be envious. Yes, it is like choosing a favourite child, but somewhere here on the forum I did do a ranking of the concerts I saw. I don't know if the Search function works well enough to find my post, but it's out there. Unfortunately it is late and I'm too tired to look for it now.

I can tell you that 6.25.72 and 6.23.77 are pretty much locked in at #1 and #2.

By envious I meant I wish I'd been born in '55 rather than '95 so that I would've had the opportunity to see them, that's all.

I will look for that list of yours. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Listening to May 23, 1975 Earls Court right now and I can now immediately place "Over the Hills and Far Away" from this show on my list of favourites.

It wasn't just being born at the right time...I was also lucky in being born in the right place. Growing up in Southern California had its advantages.

If I had been born in Montana or North Dakota, I would have been fucked. I would have been lucky to get an "Up With People" concert, let alone Led Zeppelin.

Hmm I'll have to check that one out!

Good point, they didn't come to Toronto after '71. Any idea why they changed the April 1 start of the '77 tour from Toronto to Dallas?

Right, but in your '77 tour thread you said that when the rescheduled dates were announced, it originally said that the tour would start April 1 at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, but then at some point it ended up being Dallas instead.

Right, but in your '77 tour thread you said that when the rescheduled dates were announced, it originally said that the tour would start April 1 at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, but then at some point it ended up being Dallas instead.

It must have been an availability issue. I assume that the Toronto Maple Leafs were involved in the NHL playoffs at that time, so there was probably a conflict with the date. So Dallas became the tour opener, and Toronto was scratched. Why they didn't reschedule Toronto for the summer along with Chicago and Philadelphia is a mystery.

Good call, I just checked; the Leafs got to the second round that year, can't find the exact dates of the games though. You're right, it's a shame it wasn't rescheduled, and it would've made a lot of sense geographically for the end of the third leg, I mean they were going to Buffalo! Hey maybe that's it, they made it the show at Ralph Wilson instead, fit in an extra 60,000!
