  1. Here's to one of the good ones! Happy birthday Deborah! You're a 'good egg' and I'll drink to that! Cheers to you on your Celebration Day!
  2. Bagel, lox and cream cheese. Half a Cantaloupe. Orange juice. Earl Grey tea.
  3. Free Beer (Dis)Honourable mention: Titties & Beer
  4. Actually there are so many great ones from 1971, it's easy to overlook many of them. What finally swung my pick towards 9-29 Osaka was the absolute stellar violin bow segment...haunting, eerie and musically melodic; and the melencholy "Pennies from Heaven" dropped in unexpectedly.
  5. They were good at Coachella...they even played "Poptones"! Have fun! Rocktober has started with a vengeance. My original plan of going to see Deerhoof tonight has been complicated by the fiscovery of additional shows taking place tonight. I now have to choose between... 1. Deerhoof @ The Echoplex 2. Emmylou Harris and the Red Dirt Boys @ Royce Hall, UCLA 3. Garbage @ Hollywood Palladium...w/ Screaming Females Having recently seen both Deerhoof and Emmylou Harris, I am leaning towards the Garbage show. Not so much because of Garbage, although Shirley Manson is quite the Scottish treat, but because I have been hearing all kinds of buzz and good word-of-mouth about Screaming Females.
  6. Totally different application...songs and poems don't count. I guarantee you that when Bob Dylan writes a check, he dates it in the mm/dd/yr fashion.
  7. Not that you're not worth listening to, Julia, but no, your post had nothing to do with changing my 'style', as you put it. Due to my schedule, I only eat a typical American-style breakfast three or four times a week. The other days I skip or I'll just grab a croissant and coffee or have some fruit. Today's breakfast was a German-style Oven Pancake at Dinah's on Sepulveda. Baked in the oven...add a little butter, lemon and powered sugar and MMMMMM...Sehr gut!
  8. Well said, zemun! This is one of those movies Jahfin and I didn't see eye-to-eye on("Tree of Life" was another); I liked it, he didn't. I can't remember if I posted a lengthy review of "Drive" or just a brief blurb, but it's no matter as you said it better than I did. Too bad "Drive" was lost in the shuffle of 2011...a fate common to good, small movies released in the summer.
  9. Today marks the 40th anniversary of the start of the 1972 Japanese Tour. Kind of overshadowed over the years by the 1971 tour. I haven't listened to the 1972 tour in ages. I only have two of the dates...Oct. 2 and Oct. 9. So today I'm listening to October 2, 1972 Budokan, Tokyo.
  10. Paul, to me Jimmy's slide sounds a little more closer to the studio version. The tone sounds rounder, fatter than the Danelectro.
  11. Sit on a couch and read and eat cheesy poofs. There...THAT'S productive!
  12. Of course I was. What wasn't a joke was the Angels getting eliminated. That made me un-happy. Mike Trout's and Jared Weaver's great seasons wasted.
  13. Wrong thread you @#$%&* douchebag! Don't they teach you Jayhawks to read in Kansas? No wonder your Chiefs STINK! Aaaarggghhhh grumble grumble!
  14. Month/Day is Yankee style...Day/Month is European/English and just about everywhere else.
  15. Of course it counts...if it's on the Telly, it counts whether you're watching via satellite, cable or rabbit ears.
  16. A jam-packed ROCK-tober is coming...but first TONITE! September 30: Wilco @ Hollywood Bowl...with Joanna Newsome. Wed. October 10: Grizzly Bear @ The Greek Theatre Thurs. October 11: Jason Bonham Led Zeppelin Experience @ The Greek Theatre Sat. October 13: Aimee Mann @ Wilshire-Ebell Theatre Wed. October 17: Neil Young & Crazy Horse @ Hollywood Bowl…with Los Lobos. Yes, this means I'll miss seeing "Led Zeppelin: Celebration Day" in the theatre. Unless they add another date to LA theatres.
  17. ^^^ The Karaoke skit is ACE! The most I've enjoyed both Mick Jagger and SNL in ages. That version of "Satisfaction" he sings at the end was quite touching and made me wish he'd sing the song that way more often. I haven't liked "Satisfaction" in concert since 1989.
  18. Thank you Gigi. I do my best, although I must say I am most proud of the fact that I took my godson to see Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes at the Greek Theatre in 1999. He was only 4 years old and he fell asleep halfway thru...but he'll likely be the only kid in his college who can say he saw Jimmy Page play guitar in person. Don't know what happened to the Foo Fighters photos I posted...maybe I deleted them accidentally.
  19. ^^^ You have a point Patrycja. I remember feeling slightly annoyed when I first heard "Born This Way" and noticed the "Express Yourself" similarity; it was too easy and too obvious a person to rip off. I'm no Lady Gaga hater, either. I'm on the record here plenty of times defending and supporting her. In this case(as in the red meat dress), her instincts failed her. But I will say this, Patrycja, that as great a career and impact as Madonna has had, she is getting a little long in the tooth for a pop princess. Yes, today's teen girls can and should find inspiration and pleasure in Madonna's music but every generation of kids needs their own pop princess. Madonna ruled the 80s and 90s and held the fort as long as she could in the 2000s while pretenders to the throne like Britney Spears, Christina A., Miley Cyrus and countless others crashed and burned. But with Lady Gaga, today's kids finally have a decent pop idol again. If she's a little derivative of Madonna at times...well, every female pop star that comes after her is bound to be influenced by the almighty M. She changed practically everything for pop queens. Plus, Lady Gaga is still young and still early in her career, so there's no telling what the future will bring. At a comparable stage in her career, Madonna was in between her "Like A Virgin" and "True Blue" albums. Career peaks like "Like a Prayer" and "Ray of Light" were years away. So I'm willing to give Lady Gaga a chance. Having seen her in concert twice, I know she has the voice and the talent to go far.
  20. A long day and night ahead of me...work, an art show opening party and an art show closing party at opposite ends of town, and a midnight movie. I need to fortify myself, so I am having my favourite chicken soup in the world: Chicken Tom Kah! Chicken, mushrooms, rice noodles in spicy coconut broth with lemongrass, lime juice and chili paste. Coupled with Vietnamese Hand Rolls: Shrimp, thin slices of ham, rice vermicelli noodles, carrots, green onions and shredded cabbage wrapped in rice paper, with a peanut sauce dip. Led Zeppelin 9-29-71 @ Osaka, Japan is providing the soundtrack.
  21. ^^^ That's the triple-album set I have, res! Doncha love the fake song titles!?
