    March Madness

Week 2 begins tonight. First game up is Dayton vs. Stanford at 7:15pm EST. I'd like to know how many people picked that regional bracket correctly, haha. Florida vs. UCLA is the marquee game of the night but I don't think UCLA will win.
  2. Spring training baseball on ESPN...Washington vs. Mets. 3-0 Nats so far. Zimmerman looked good pitching for the Nats.
  3. QFT. "We lost two heroes here today." Mayor Martin J. Walsh
  4. A great loss, Rick. End of an era for sure. When I read the news of Ralph Wilson's passing, I immediately thought of the old AFL days when Ralph Wilson and Al Davis were just getting started..but I see Bong-Man has already mentioned that bit of history. It'll be strange this year with both Detroit and Buffalo entering the season without their long-time owners. A new era begins for both teams. BITE YOUR TONGUE, WALTER! We don't want no stinking Panthers out here! And relax Rick...no way is Buffalo losing the Bills to L.A.! Your team is safe. In the Evening, actually LA had two teams...the Rams and the Raiders...and both teams drew more fans than most every other team in the NFL. But because the Coliseum's capacity was near 100,000, it was impossible to sell out every game. The Rams and Raiders would regularly draw 75,000-80,000 but because of the NFL's arcane TV blackout rules, none of the games would be on TV. Living in LA with both the Rams and the Raiders in town sucked because you often got only one Sunday game on TV. The 1975 NFC Conference Championship game between the Rams and Dallas at the Coliseum still holds the record for largest attendance at a conference title game. The 1983 AFC Conference Championship game between the Raiders and Seattle is close behind. There are plenty of football fans out here. But we don't want another city's castoffs like Jacksonville or Carolina. And the Coliseum is ancient and unsuited for the modern NFL. Plus the Coliseum Commission is inept and corrupt...they were the reason the Lakers, the Rams, and the Raiders all left L.A. in the first place.
  5. Way up high, four rows down from the very last row in the rear right Colonnades...and Bonham's drums still felt like cannon fire.
  6. Birthday time again...this time to aen27, Pagette of Massachusetts. May you have a White Poppy Suit of a Celebration Day, aen27! Woot! Woot! Just think...while you were being born, I was watching this: And this: Happy birthday! Cheers!
  7. The current issues of Q and CLASSIC ROCK magazines with their Led Zeppelin special articles is a perfect example of how so much music journalism has gone downhill today. Mistakes and cliches galore...trite and predictable soundbites...research and insight seemingly straight from Wikipedia. A big yawn and big waste of time and money...nothing in these magazines that most of you Led Zeppelin fans haven't seen and read before. I certainly don't expect Rolling Stone to do much better, but I do have higher hopes for Mojo.

Surveying the wreckage from the weekend...two of my ESPN.com bracket entries are pretty much toast, ranked 9,000,000 or worse. Then, I have one entry where I went 28-4 in the Round of 64, then 10-6 in the Round of 32, to total 480 points and rank 190,031 out of 11 million entries...or 98.3%. Better than President Obama! In fact, better than Tony Kornheiser and Mike Wilbon in the Pardon the Interruption Group and better than all the Around the Horn panelists. But here's the rub...because two of the teams I had making it to the Final Four are already out (Wichita St. and Villanova), I have a better chance with my other bracket, currently ranked 4,945,080 with 410 points, because all four of my Final Four teams (Florida, Michigan St., Arizona, Louisville) are still alive.
  9. What a terrible weekend it was last week...Stooge drummer Scott Asheton passed away on Saturday and the day before, leader of the awesome and out-of-nowhere '60s band The Monks, Gary Burger, shuffled off this mortal coil. Rest in peace. http://blog.thecurrent.org/2014/03/gary-burger-of-the-monks-passes-away/
  10. I was there and let me tell you that it was obvious from not only Steve Martin's popularity at the time, but also the way Robert used the phrase and the inflection he used that it was inspired by Steve Martin's routine. Nothing to do with Jimi Hendrix or anything else...it was THIS: http://youtu.be/szRQurfpJPw
  11. In the 5-CD Carouselambra while doing some work: SLINT "Spiderland"...check out the new documentary on this ahead-of-their-time Louisville band Slint, "Breadcrumb Trail". BECK "Morning Phase"...beauty, pure and simple. http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLqhNzBA9MSSrvfWCWevWArpCeaNA46EdD THE WAR ON DRUGS "Lost In The Dream"...their stellar new album just released last week...some of the best driving, road-trip music ever! http://youtu.be/r0PxpilZvjc THE MONKS "Black Monk Time"...one of my favourite '60s psycho-beat bands...formed in Germany by American GIs...R.I.P. Gary Burger, who just passed away March 14. http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8F5DB6F54A8ACB74 LED ZEPPELIN "L'Olympia"...refreshing my memory for the official release of this October 10, 1969 Paris show in June.
  12. If I had a nickel for every time Wikipedia has been wrong... I've listened to this song a zillion times and have never heard a zither. Acoustic guitars and mandolins and bass are all the string instruments I hear.
  13. Goddamn Bud Selig! Who has the Opening Day occur half a world away in the midst of the hubbub of March Madness, so that it is all but lost in the shuffle? Would a giant wolverine just devour him already and rid us of this incompetent baboon! Ok...a trifle late but I was under the impression the season wasn't beginning for another week. Here are my predictions: AMERICAN LEAGUE AL WEST: Oakland AL CENTRAL: Detroit AL EAST: Baltimore AL WILD CARDS: Boston, Tampa Bay NATIONAL LEAGUE NL WEST: San Francisco NL CENTRAL: St. Louis NL EAST: Atlanta NL WILD CARDS: Washington, Cincinnati WORLD SERIES: Detroit vs. San Francisco AL CY YOUNG: Felix Hernandez NL CY YOUNG: Clayton Kershaw
  14. I'd be inclined to agree with you, except I wonder if Sanchez has taken too much of a beating, psychologically and physically, these last few years to ever regain any semblance of the promise he showed his first few seasons. Maybe he'll go to the home of all forsaken quarterbacks: Oakland, who have already taken on Matt Schaub in desperation.
  15. Last night's dinner. Spicy Thai Bowl of Jasmine rice with spicy green beans, basil, and eggplant, with red curry and topped with green papaya slaw and peanuts. This morning's good old-fashioned American breakfast. Wakey wakey! Eggs and bakey!
  16. I did. Another hottie from Ukraine. Haven't seen any of the films she's done, and some on her IMDB list seem to be fake (ie. Richard III), but good luck with your screenplay.
  17. ^^^ Not watching the tournament? Stanford vs. Kansas.

Down goes Syracuse! Down goes Syracuse! Down goes Syracuse! (Sorry Walter ) Down goes 'Nova, too. That's 6-2 for my Sweet 16 yesterday. Hopefully I'll go 8-0 today and raise my rankings. All Final Four picks still alive in most of my entries. Poor Rick. Syracuse started the season on such a roll, a championship seemed inevitable or at least probable. To not even reach the Sweet 16, let alone Elite Eight, has to rank as a bitter disappointment for 'Cuse fans.

There will be blood. After the first round, I was 21-11 in the 32 games in one of my ESPN entries, including a wipeout in my Midwest bracket...only got 3 out of 8 correct.
  20. The annual Film Noir festival has begun, and as a lover of film noir, I'm in ecstasy. http://americancinemathequecalendar.com/content/noir-city-hollywood-16th-annual-festival-of-film-noir Heaven...I'm in heaven.
  21. Somebody is always going to grumble in these situations...you can't please everyone. They'll get over it. The Premier is right; it is a good pr opportunity. I totally forgot about the Aussie games. Do these games count in the standings?
