  1. That's fantastic, and I'm not an ITTOD fan. I love the ad-libbing at the end (w/In the Light).
  2. What have you got against old white guys? And are you saying that the person who released this tape is a COC (Collector of Color)? Or simply a young white guy? Do tell.
  3. I couldn't have been more wrong about this one. A great-sounding audience tape just surfaced (literally today, there's another thread about it here), and it is a red-hot show, Page is out-of-this-world. The soundboard for the last third doesn't do it justice, it doesn't capture the energy level. Could easily make it to the top 5.
  4. 5150. I never cared for Van Hagar, but this is a hard-rocking album, a bit of a return to form (short-lived) after the direction of 1984. (I think the music was mainly written during the period between DLR leaving and Hagar joining, probably not a coincidence.)
  5. D&C and STH are already up at Black Beauty: http://starship.jpn.ph/zeppelin/beauty/disp/boot.jsp?R_idx=2773 If these are any indication, this is a seriously hot concert, Page is fantastic here. And we'll finally get a complete Dancing Days!
  6. Yeah, I guess. No idea at all if EVH was a bootleg fan or even a big enough Zeppelin fan to seek out underground tapes, but who knows. The context of his comments seemed to me that he was basing his opinion after having actually seen Page live. And they went a bit further than simply wanting someone to change a particular song on the radio.
  7. Speaking of trips, that girl is clearly on something. She's having a good time, I guess. As mentioned, the size of the crowd is striking, I think a couple hundred is a generous estimate. Almost like a modern video where they bring in an audience of extras. Wasn't this gig in the mountains/hills or something? Maybe that explains why there weren't a lot of people.
  8. Maybe. Cockiness would simply involve claiming he's doing stuff light years ahead of the old guard, etc. Saying that Page plays live like his fingers are broken is just a gratuitous insult, and completely untrue to boot (esp. if based on seeing Page in his prime, i.e. pre-75). Who knows, maybe he was on something when he gave the interview (EVH wasn't exactly a teetotaler even before his serious substance abuse problems).
  9. Pretty shocking, then, that EVH would make those disparaging "broken fingers" or whatever comment when asked about Page's live playing. (Although I suppose in '73 and '75 Page literally did have physical hand problems.) Even in '77 (esp. LA) Page wasn't even remotely so sloppy as to justify that kind of assessment.
  10. The trill in the STH solo is awesome, he would use it in a few UK shows in December (Manchester and Glasgow). I think the first time he played it was the Nassau show on 6-14-72. A pity he didn't retain it.
  11. I actually asked this question on a previous thread almost two years, did not receive a clear answer. The consensus seemed to be that EVH would have had the opportunity to see Zep live in SoCal on several occasions in the 70's, so I guess we don't know what specific show he could have been referring to. Even in his prime, Page was probably too sloppy for someone like EVH's liking, but the broken fingers comment is just ridiculous. Even in '77 (in LA at least) Page was never that bad.
  12. Definitely the Osaka shows are 1 & 2, the soundboards (sadly incomplete) reinforce their status. Best Immigrant Song ever on the 29th (Page drops hints of it on the 28th), and one of the best Thank You 's on the 29th. Great Communication Breakdown that night as well. All-time great show, for sure.
  13. This has probably been posted here before, but it's worth a bump. I love these raw, early demos (sounds like they had already written much of the material through Fair Warning by '76): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-3b3TPgkOQ
  14. https://www.blabbermouth.net/news/ritchie-blackmore-says-eddie-van-halen-was-the-ultimate-guitar-hero/
  15. It was always shocking, what a dick EVH was towards Michael Anthony.
  16. Which is sort of the point of saying they were the *first* metal band.
  17. There was a really cool episode earlier this year on Sirius Liquid Metal's Bloody Roots show on the heavy music around the time of Sabbath's debut album: https://blog.bazillionpoints.com/2020/02/01/fifty-years-of-metal-i-the-roots-of-pre-sabbath-heaviness/
  18. I would regard Sabbath as the first metal band, although obviously Zeppelin and Purple's influence on the genre can't be understated. Like a lot of the heavy bands of the era, Sabbath's repertoire was a lot more diverse than your typical metal band today, but I think musically (and thematically) they took things to the next level (relative to other heavy bands from the late 60's, e.g. Cream, etc.), to what you commonly see in metal music today.
  19. Very sad news. He was a guitarist with few equals, but more important than technical ability, he wrote some great rock n roll songs.
  20. Never mind that, didn't they know the difference between past and present tenses? (At least they got everything right in the [presumably] more recent pic posted by Steve.)
