USA tour, Spring 1970

I have been revisiting some of the live Zeppelin tours recently after many years of burn out.

The Spring tour of the USA in March and April of 1970 is kind of repetivite in that the setist was rather stagnant

but after all these years OMG, the How Many More Times from Houston 3.29.70 sure has held it's ground

and in retrospect I think it's probably the tour highlight with Tampa (4.9.70) and Memphis (4.17.70) and (3.27.70) LA

coming in close.

The HMMT from Houston is stellar and has the band at it's 1970 best. Page's playing and soloing through out is incendary.

Same for Bonham and Jones. The three musicians of the band try three times to get into "For What It's Worth" but Plant

(the biggest hippie of the band) doesn't go for it and after the third attempt they stomp into "Tobacco Road" and then the too short tape spool runs out...

Just everything about this ranks up there with the best ever live Zep. Do youself a favor and revisit this concert and put a smile on your face...that means you

Nutrocker, sam_webmaster, Sue D., ledzepfilm, and countless others out there...

I believe the only show I've heard from this tour is the Raleigh show I picked up back in the 80's. Haven't listened to it in a while, so now I need to check it out again. I'll have to look around for the others you mentioned. How are the sound qualities of those shows?

The Raleigh has the best ever "Bring It On Home." The quality of the ones I mentioned are not so hot...low end audience tapes but if you can get past that

you will enjoy what you hear.

The March 21, Vancouver "Pb" show is one of my favourite bootlegs ever. Also have to give a shout out to the powerful April 8, Raleigh, NC concert. Other people have already mentioned the 3.27 LA Forum and 4.17 Memphis ones.

My frustration is that so many of the Spring 1970 tapes are incomplete...it seems rare that a taper brought enough tape to record the complete show.

A friend of mine ( a good one obviously) has just given me a box set of the band titled "Led Zeppelin - Through The years". I am currently listening to the "pb" section and it is fantastic. I have looked on the net but can't get any info regarding this package. It has 5 discs and contains live cuts and studio outakes from the years of existence of the band. It starts off with the Huw Wheldon TV show skiffle song right up to Berlin 1980.

The package has made in Italy and although i have a fair bit of what's on it, the quality is amazing. I have just got out disc 1 and a track is on there that I have never heard called "Tribute To Bert Berns" a gospel song - really groovy. Maybe I have it somewhere!

Next on the disc will be a real listening pleasure: As Long As I Have You from Fillmore West Jan 9th 69, wonder how it compares with the April 1969 classic?

Anyone who can shed more light on this delightful package? And by the way my friend said " you can have it, it's far too difficult to listen"

Is this the one you're talking about, CP?

This was one of the first anthology bootleg box sets I remember seeing..."Another Trip" was another title at the time. When bootlegs first started appearing on CDs in the 80s-90s, many of the early ones were from Italy and other European countries. There was some loophole in the law that allowed them to exploit the Grey Market. Some of the tracks on these sets were misdated.

  • 11 months later...

Not to stir up a speculation train or anything, but I'm wondering if the reported 1970 documentary ever amounted to anything.

1970 was an amazing year in terms of the concert performances and I think it needs to be better represented with more footage and audio.

I have this set. I bought it way back in the early 90's

I dug the Phoenix show and We're Gonna Grove on the Vancouver show was awesome. I always found it funny that most of these bootlegs where recorded by people with low budget equipment and 30 some years later it all gets posted on a Internet website. I'm sure if something like YouTube existed back then, more of these tapes would be circulated more between other people.

I would agree that the first few surviving minutes of that HMMT from the 29th of March in Houston is some if the very best, sweetest zeppelin I've ever heard.

I'll never forget getting the 2 cd set of fragmented and rough sounding recordings of the the 28th and 29th 1970 and being pretty upset at the sound quality until I heard that segment of HMMT. Truly one of the moments of 'magic' on status that the band spoke of. Easily in my top ten, maybe five performances alltime from this band.
