The photo die-hard Janis fans love to hate..........

PIGPENANDJANISinthe60s.jpg

I'm guessing they might be offended by Pigpen grabbing her breast. Thing is, Janis herself doesn't seem the least bit offended by it.

^

That's what I thought;it doesn't seem offensive to me at all, least of all to Janis herself....

I wouldn't classify myself as a "die-hard" Janis fan but, as a woman (and not a wanton one), I never found that photo (and others like it) offensive. That is just what things were like back then. ftr, I never found the antics that the Zep guys engaged in back in the day offensive either.

Funny how someone that supposedly knows so much about Janis doesn't even recognise Pigpen and also doesn't know of his relationship with Janis.

I am amazed she would get invlovled with him. I have never read a good story about him. Not a nice guy apprarently.

I consider myself a pretty big Grateful Dead fan and I can't think of one negative story about Pigpen off the top of my head. To my knowledge he was always well regarded not only by his bandmates but by Dead fans as well. Maybe you're thinking of the Peanuts character. I heard he was a real ass to Peppermint Patty on more than one occasion.

I've not been a Janis fan for long-only a few months. I also don't listen to the Grateful Dead.

Thanks for clarifying, I somehow got the impression that you were a big Janis fan and were well versed in her history.

As for the Grateful Dead, you really need to fix that.

I never heard anything negative about Pigpen either. He did his share of drugs and suffered from alcoholism. Like Janis, he died young (only a year or two after her death). In one of the Dead bios, there was a discussion about the difficulties he had with acid. I don't remember the name of the book or the details. Pigpen did look rather like a "scary biker dude" and I think that the Hell's Angels made him an official member but I don't ever remember reading or hearing that he was involved with them.

Not really, I read 2 books about her, and when they talked about guys she had seen they don't mention him. They talked about Jim Morrison, but not him.

Not here. But I remember it well. Robert had only lovely things to say about Janis. He was very discreet in his responses to Charlie Rose but you could tell from his facial expressions and the way in which he spoke about Janis, that it was a positive encounter.

When I first saw Zep, they still had a hippyish vibe about them that I liked. :hippy: I know that you remember those days too, Rover. Here is a link to that interview:

I have a file of this interview too, Rover. If you want it, PM me.

One was Love, Janis by her sister. The other was Scars of Sweet Paradise.

That's odd that neither of those mentioned Pigpen but wasn't Love, Janis all reprints of letters from Janis (I think they even made a play out of it)? Can't say I'm familiar with the other one.

Yes. MSG, I really do remember seeing Zep for the first time in August of 1970. Very Hippe feel to it all. The boys had just spent time communing together recording LZ III. It was a very Groovy Concert ! Mt first time getting high, albeit, second hand smoke.... a LOT of second hand smoke...

That was special time. I remember seeing this chick, down in the floor seating, about 20 rows back....she stood out becuase she had a bid head of blonde hair, and she stood --on the seat of her chair-- rocking and moving and grooving through most of whole concert. I know that the boys must gotten energy for her as well :hippy:

Sad to say, I never got to see Janis in person. But there's always the Monterey Pop Festival footage. B):D
