The Rover
There are songs by other bands that I believe would make others think about Jimmy. One that comes to mind is Heart's "Magic Man"..... Magic Man Cold late night so long ago When I was not so strong you know A pretty man came to me Never seen eyes so blue I could not run away It seemed we'd seen each other in a dream It seemed like he knew me He looked right through me "Come on home, girl" he said with a smile "You don't have to love me yet Let's get high awhile But try to understand Try to understand Try try try to understand I'm a magic man." Winter nights we sang in tune Played inside the months of moon Never think of never Let this spell last forever Summer over passed to fall Tried to realized it all Mama says she's a worried Growing up in a hurry "Come on home, girl" mama cried on the phone "Too soon to lose my baby yet my girl should be at home!" "But try to understand, try to understand Try try try to understand He's a magic man, mama He's a magic man" Oooh, he's got the Magic Hands . . . "Come on home, girl" he said with a smile "I cast my spell of love on you a woman from a child! But try to understand, try to understand I'm a magic man!" Jimmy's A Legend
Mr. Mistoffelees You ought to know Mr. Mistoffelees! The Original Conjuring Cat - (There can be no doubt about that). Please listen to me and don't scoff. All his Inventions are off his own bat. There's no such Cat in the metropolis; He holds all the patent monopolies For performing surprising illusions And creating eccentric confusions. At prestidigitation And at legerdemain He'll defy examination And deceive you again. The greatest magicians have something to learn From Mr. Mistoffelees' Conjuring Turn. Presto! Away we go! And we all say: OH! Well I never! Was there ever A Cat so clever As Magical Mr. Mistoffelees! He is quiet and small, he is black From his ears to the tip of his tail; He can creep through the tiniest crack He can walk on the narrowest rail. He can pick any card from a pack, He is equally cunning with dice; He is always deceiving you into believing That he's only hunting for mice. He can play any trick with a cork Or a spoon and a bit of fish-paste; If you look for a knife or a fork And you think it is merely misplaced - You have seen it one moment, and then it is gawn! But you'll find it next week lying out on the lawn. And we all say: OH! Well I never! Was there ever A Cat so clever As Magical Mr. Mistoffelees! His manner is vague and aloof, You would think there was nobody shyer - But his voice has been heard on the roof When he was curled up by the fire. and he's sometimes been heard by the fire When he was about on the roof - (At least we all heard somebody who purred) Which is incontestable proof Of his singular magical powers: And I have known the family to call Him in from the garden for hours, While he was asleep in the hall. And not long ago this phenomenal Cat Produced seven kittens right out of a hat! And we all said: OH! Well I never! Did you ever Know a Cat so clever As Magical Mr. Mistoffelees! I know that it is not a song it is a poem but 1) it reminds me of him and 2) it has been sung in the musical. aen27
A couple make me think of him, the first is more of what he means to me. Barry White's "You're The First, The Last, My Everything." It's so swirly almost how Jimmy makes you so dizzy... "I know there is only one like you there is no way they could have never made two Your my reality I'm lost and not free You're the first, the last, my everything" The second is the British Kaliedescope's "Sky Children." Thinking of Jimmy as a dreamy little boy. "The children were so sad the time had come to leave. So the people waved good-bye and beg them to leave of the wonders they had seen in the island of the sky. And they said they would and away they did fly through the white clouds of no time. Til forever it seems and the children staid children and lived in their dreams" Edited July 31, 2008 by aen27

Aquamarine
Has Ann or Nancy Wilson ever said who Magic Man is about? I always thought that they were singing about Jimmy, especially since they're both big Zeppelin fans. They didn't write the song, did they? I could have sworn I'd heard it earlier sung by various other people, but that could be my increasingly shaky memory.
The Rover
Another One to think about Jimmy by: "Guitar Man" by Bread (the "Baby, I'm a want you"... band) Who draws the crowd and plays so loud, Baby its the guitar man. Whos gonna steal the show, you know Baby its the guitar man, He can make you love, he can make you cry He will bring you down, then hell get you high Somethin keeps him goin, miles and miles a day To find another place to play. Night after night who treats you right, Baby its the guitar man Whos on the radio, you go listen To the guitar man Then he comes to town, and you see his face, And you think you might like to take his place Somethin keeps him driftin miles and miles away Searchin for the songs to play. Then you listen to the music and you like to sing along, You want to get the meaning out of each and evry song Then you find yourself a message and some words to call your own And take them home. He can make you love, he can get you high He will bring you down, then hell make you cry Somethin keeps him movin, but no one seems to know What it is that makes him go. Then the lights begin to flicker and the sound is getting dim The voice begins to falter and the crowds are getting thin But he never seems to notice hes just got to find Another place to play, Anyway got to play, anyway got to play. I always thought that they were singing about Jimmy, especially since they're both big Zeppelin fans. It's a great song. We used to think the song was about Robert, because of the mention of "blue eyes". But then, I seem to remember reading an interview with Nancy (or Ann) and it she said the song was about an old boyfriend. I think it might have been Nancy because in a later interview, she talked about dating a rocker but when she met Cameron, there was an instant and beautiful connection between the two. Virginia
Not for the lyrics, but I've always thought the guitar solo in the Cult's "Love Removal Machine" sounded very Jimmy-ish, esp. the second solo at the end:

I know the Wilson sisters are from the Seattle area, but it might be possible that they heard the story & wrote a song. These are all great songs guys, you all have great tastes in music. When I was younger, I used to think that all of these songs were about Pagey. When I think of Pagey in a song, I think of two of Paul McCartney's songs as a tribute to Jimmy from the VENUS AND MARS album from 1975 entitled "Venus And Mars" and "Rock Show." The lyrics go like this quoted word for word as follows: VENUS AND MARS Sitting in the stand of the sports arena, waiting for the show to begin. Red lights, green lights, strawberry wine, A good friend of mine, follows the stars, Venus and Mars are alright tonight. ROCK SHOW What's that man holding in his hand? He looks a lot like a guy I knew way back when It's silly willy with the Philly band Could be......OO-ee......... What's that man movin' cross the stage? It looks a lot like the one used by JIMMY PAGE It's like a relic from a different age Could be......OO-ee......... If there's a ROCK SHOW at the Concertgebow They've got long hair at the Madison Square You've got Rock and Roll at the Hollywood Bowl, we'll be there.......Oh yeah.......... The lights go down---they're back in town O.K. Behind the stacks you glimpse an axe The tension mounts you score an ounce Ole! Temperatures rise as you see the white of their eyes If there's a ROCK SHOW..... in my green metal suit I'm preparing to shoot up the city And the ring at the end of my nose makes me look rather pretty It's a pity there's nobody here to witness the end Save for my dear old friend and confidante--- Mademoiselle Kitty What's that man movin' to and fro? That decibal meter doesn't seem to be reading low. But they was louder at the Rainbow Could be...........OO-ee......... If there's a ROCK SHOW at the Concertgebow They've got long hair at the Madison Square You've got Rock and Roll at the Hollywood Bowl we'll be there...... Oh yeah...... If there's a ROCK SHOW...... I jumped out of my seat and was rushing the other girl out of the drivers seat, because I wanted to be driving the car when that part of the song came on (which of course I was ) One of the girls in the back who knew I was a Zeppelin & Pagey nut at that time was of course giggling about it

My best friend Tod and I were in the same school driver car along with our teacher and we were listening to "Rock Show" on the radio. It was raining hard that day and I could barely see where I was going and as I was making a left turn, I made the turn too wide resulting in me hitting a telephone poll. WHAT IS IT WITH ME AND TELEPHONE POLLS? After that, I got kicked out of class and had to take the class over again the following semester which I passed. Y-E-A-H! When I think of Pagey in a song, in my opinion, I can only think of one song that pretty much sums Jimmy up. That song, the 1986 classic "Wanted Dead Or Alive" by BON JOVI. Music & Lyrics by Jon Bon Jovi & Ritchie Sambora. The lyrics go like this word for word: WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE It's all the same, only the names will change Everyday it seems we're wasting away Another place where the faces are so cold I'd drive all night Just to get back home I'm a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride I'm wanted dead or alive Wanted dead or alive Sometimes I sleep, sometimes it's not for days And people I meet always go their separate ways Sometimes you tell the day By the bottle that you drink And times when you're all alone all you do is think I'm a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride I'm wanted dead or alive Wanted dead or alive Guitar solo I'm a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride And I'm wanted dead or alive Wanted dead or alive I walk these streets, a loaded six string on my back I play for keeps, cause I might not make it back I been everywhere, still I'm standing tall I've seen a million faces And I've rocked them all I'm a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride I'm wanted dead or alive I'm a cowboy, I got the night on my side I'm wanted dead or alive Wanted dead or alive END OF SONG In my opinion, that song pretty much sums up Jimmy Page. ROCK ON!
