10 Essential Hard Rock Albums

The Rover

Recommended Posts

I saw Kansas in Florida and they were very good. I have to say Boston had 2 very good albums. But I must disagree with Styx. They are no Led Zeppelin of course, but they are a damn good band. Paradise theatre was good. They had a lot of big hits. Their keyboard player was good too. I think REO was way overated. But then you could say the same about ACDC too couldnt you? I think there are the categories of super bands like Zepp and the Beatles and then the very good bands. I think Styx deserves some credit. And what about Jethro Tull and ELP?

Glad to see the love for Styx.

Saw them for Grand Illusion with UFO opening - incredible show.

Man In The Wilderness was the encore, and to this day it's still one of my all-time favorite tunes.

70s Styx was really good stuff.

For everyone who picked TEN by Pearl Jam, am I alone in thinking that the best version of Evenflow is the single one? It can be found on the greatest hits comp as well.

Also, how many of you are still fans? I think that they have aged well, much better than R.E.M. IMO.

Pearl Jam is the last great rock band. They really are. I'm just happy they snuck in before the corporate accountants took rock music over completely.

Long live Pearl Jam..........

Regards;

I'm a pretty big Pearl Jam fan but I wouldn't call them "the last great rock band". One of them perhaps but far from the last. As for "corporate accountants taking over rock music completely" I can't say I agree with that either as there are many, many very worthy artists out there. They may not be on the front page of every national magazine or even garnering airplay on commercial radio but they're definitely out there; many of them.

Thank you for saying that. You consistently prove your sensibility. (This is not sarcasm.)

Thanks, I do my best not to make such statements without being able to back them up. In fact, there's one band out there who's slogan happens to be "the world's last rock n' roll band" named Marah. Understandably, even the band themselves aren't happy about such a slogan but they do live up to that sort of promise, especially in concert when they play as though their very lives depend upon it. There's certainly not a lot of artists out there today with that sort of passion but they're definitely some.

Hi Jahfin, This did not go unnoticed. I'm a big Eric Amble fan. Care to tell me a bit about this release? JT

It's their debut, they now have another one out (also highly recommended). Imagine a cross between Skynyrd and the Black Crowes with a good deal of vintage Stones and Faces thrown in. You can read more about them here:

I see a couple of mentions for Billion Dollar Babies. Great album but to me, it's dragged down by some subpar numbers towards the end of the record. Personally, I'd rate Love It Death and Killer higher as far as being "essential hard rock" albums. by the way, in case neither of you have it, the deluxe edition of Billion Dollar Babies is a must own. The bonus material kicks ass.

Speaking of which, I can't say I've ever thought of Sgt. Peppers' Lonely Heart Club Band, The Joshua Tree or Rumours as "hard rock" albums. Same for Dark Side.

As I mentioned before, I'm curious to know when these became "hard rock" albums. I still don't hear any hard rock on The Joshua Tree or Rumours either. If anything, that era of Fleetwood Mac had much more to do with the California-drenched, softer sounds of rock n' roll than anything even remotely approaching hard rock.
