In the middle of dazed and confuse, KISS would fly onto the stage with harnesses breathing Fire and they'd have a big jam. Unbelievable. Then they'd have a mock battle onstage. All Led Zeppelin dressed in fantasy costumes from the movie. Page would cast spells with laser beams and Plant would wield a sword against gene simmons and ace frehley. Biggest concert ever. Then there's the having a couple of people parade around in makeup made famous by Ace Frehley and Peter Criss. Add to that, the crass commercialism. For me, they were a band that was perfect for me when I growing up back in the 70s. As a teenager what more could you ask for in a rock n' roll band than the fire breathing, blood spitting, explosive nature of their live shows? By the time they put out Dynasty I had completely lost interest. As an adult I have next to no interest in them other than some nostalgia but I still have no desire to see them in concert these days. I feel fortunate to have seen them on the Rock n' Roll Over tour back in '76 as it is one of the best concerts I've ever seen from a stage show perspective. I also believe they belong in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame but my respect for them ends there. People also love to slam them for what they perceive as their lack of musicianship but that was never a problem to me as rock n' roll has always been about "three chords and the truth". There isn't enough space to list all the reasons I loathe Kiss...but Jahfin did a good job touching on some of them in the above post. I saw them three times in the 70s: 1974, 1976 and 1977. Yes, they had a razzle-dazzle stage show, but even then, I could see that it was meant to distract you from noticing their meager songs. Look, I like simple, dumb rowdy rock too. Loved the Stooges, Alice Cooper, Ramones. They all had great SONGS! Kiss didn't...the only two songs I liked were "Cold Gin" and "Rock n Roll All Night". And I soon tired of "Rock n Roll All Night" after radio played it to death. That leaves precisely ONE song of theirs that doesn't have me reaching for the "off" button when it comes on. After 1977, I put them in the rear-view mirror. By then the stench of crassness was unmistakable...to me they were a teeny-bopper metal band, designed to appeal and take advantage of the naive and unformed tastes of tweens and teens and their(and their parents) pocketbooks. And I wasn't alone...lots of people hated Kiss back then. They made Grand Funk Railroad sound sophisticated in comparison. You might have some Kiss fans also liking Led Zeppelin, but rarely did you have the reverse. When the two biggest rock radio stations in LA, KMET and KLOS, did their annual Memorial Day 500 of the most popular songs as requested by listeners, Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, Rolling Stones, the Who, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Van Halen, Aerosmith, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, the Doors, Eagles, Bob Dylan, Neil Young all far out-distanced Kiss. Kiss might have had 2 songs at most in the poll: Beth and R n R all night. After the 70s, thanks to their longevity and the help of MTV and VH1, Kiss has been able to do a bit of revisionist history and portray themselves as being more popular than they really were in the 70s. Their popularity was more regional than national. Their hotspots were Detroit and New York. In the 90s, against my better judgement, I allowed myself to be talked by my friends into going to the Psycho Circus 3D concert at Dodger Stadium, with the Smashing Pumpkins opening. I think it was on Halloween night. The big deal about this show was that this was when Ace and Peter were back with the band for the first time in years. Of course, that didn't last long. The show was only memorable for three reasons: 1) The Smashing Pumpkins came out dressed like the Beatles at Shea Stadium; 2) Ace played probably the lamest guitar solo bit I've ever heard; and 3) I had one of the most memorable shags after the show with a vixen dressed as Elvira. Dolls, lunchboxes, etc,etc,etc. They were a gimick band and they would be the first to admit that I'm sure. Gene Simmons knew they could be the biggest band in the world with the right market, and they were for a while. Notice I didn't say the best, but the biggest. That's where all the rock magazines came into play, in the mid/late 70's with the Kiss vs. Zeppelin headlines. Anyone with a clear head knows that musically it's no contest, but for whatever reason that's how it was. I remember being a kid and all my friends (6-8 years old) liked Kiss. Why? Because they wore make-up. We knew nothing about music, but they liked Kiss. They were like a comic book band. That appealed to them and to alot of others. Agreed for the most part but Alice has many songs with more than three chords. While it is a highly remote possibility they would ever share a stage with KISS, they already have with Alice. I love Alice's use of hyperbole, sarcasm, wit, and drama. No one has brought rock theatre like Alice and his musicians were just that, musicians. Those guys could play very well. Now regarding Kiss, Gene is a tosser, Paul is in the closet, the other two??? Who cares. Just as Jahfin and Strider have said, they have a couple of catchy tunes and that's it. Gene has even mentioned in several interviews he has no idea how to play the bass, but he is a marketing genius. They completely lost any semblance of respect when they did that TV movie back in 78' I believe. He claimed he never learned to play the bass and just plays a very basic pattern at different tempos depending on the song. He said he only got into music to make money and shag the ladies.
