Yeah I'm guessing that's a lamp, but it should really have been turned off. Presumably what was arranged was an interview just before the Celebration Day conference, and the photo was a quick bonus for the magazine. If that had been a professional shoot, you would have seen smooth lighting. Check out the Washington Post article for shots that were likely from the same day, and lit much better.

Cookie, yes indeed, I see what you mean. Also, thanks for the article - I hadn't read it before.

Have loved the excited discussion around this thread .. but Cookie 0024, I think you've just expressed my point .. that actually a magazine that deals in professional shoots ( and in the UK has a very expensively staged/doctored shot of Rachel Weiss on the cover) .. and which (I'd guess) carries a John Varvatos JP ad ... should end up with something a bit cheesy and cobbled together ..

If you were a glossy magazine editor offered the opportunity to take a photo of Jimmy in a hotel bedroom... well, where to begin ?

Still, good to see it all the same and I look forward to hearing more about it !

Thanks so much Wallis-Anne-Young for posting this. All I could have wanted from this month's Esquire magazine, so I won't be buying it. My loss, presumably. I always enjoy a bit of GQ at the hairdresser's ( SUCH a different perspective and usually strong editorially ) .

But I know some of you will buy the whole magazine so I look forward to hearing what delights ( other than Jimmy) I've missed !

The look on Jimmy's face is...like a kid who got caught with his hand

in the proverbial cookie jar...or with a porn magazine...weird.

Looks a little chubbier in the face as well.

I suspect this is intentional on both Page's part and that of the photographer. I'm sure he's well aware of his "off-beat" reputation. He probably thought "Let's keep the public guessing" hence the mischievous smile. Also, he's not just a rock legend; he's a rock survivor. The 'bit worse for wear' look is appropriate given the content of this interview.

Thanks so much for the heads-up! I doubt I would've noticed since there's no picture on the cover, and Esquire is not a magazine I would consider a likely source. I've been on the hunt for more magazine articles ever since the barrage of coverage after the release of Celebration Day and the Kennedy Center Honors. Thanks again. :yourock:

  • 3 months later...

I don't know why some are so fascinated by "the guitar" in the picture. It's just my opinion but, I've always thought that anytime JP's photographed in these types of scenarios, the guitars are not the originals. They did make more than one Danelectro and as for the Les Pauls', I just figured they were probably just one of his signature series reproductions. I just can't see him dragging the real ones around. Their priceless and most likely under lock and key( anyone remember the fate of a certain Black Beauty?).
