Airport threat to your laptop: U.S. also gets power to seize iPods and mobiles in new anti-terror measure

By Daily Mail Reporter

Last updated at 2:37 PM on 02nd August 2008

Travellers to the U.S. could have their laptops and other electronic devices seized at the airport under new anti-terror measures.

Federal agents have been granted powers to take such devices and hold them as long as they like.

They do not even need grounds to suspect wrongdoing.

New powers: The Department for Homeland Security in the U.S. have been granted powers to seize laptops and other electronic devices at airports under new anti-terror measures

The Department of Homeland Security said the policies applied to anyone entering the country by land, sea or air, including U.S. citizens.

The extent of the new powers, which have been secretly in place for some time, was revealed yesterday in the Washington Post.

They cover hard drives, flash drives, mobile phones, iPods, pagers, beepers, and video and audio tapes, as well as books, pamphlets and other written materials, the report said.

Federal agents must take measures to protect business information and lawyer-client privileged material.

Copies of data must be destroyed when a review is completed and no probable cause exists to keep the information.

But agents are allowed to share the contents of seized computers with other agencies and private entities for data decryption and 'other reasons'.

Copies sent to non-federal entities must be returned to the DHS, but there is no limitation on authorities keeping written notes or reports about the materials.

The new powers came to light under pressure from civil liberties and business travel groups after increasing numbers of travellers reported that they had laptops, phones and other digital devices removed and examined.

The development was described as 'truly alarming' by Wisconsin Democrat Senator-Russell Feingold, who is investigating U.S. border search practices.

He said he intends to introduce legislation that would require reasonable suspicion for border searches, as well as prohibit profiling on race, religion or national origin.

DHS officials insisted the policies were reasonable and necessary to prevent terrorism.

They said they had been disclosed only because of public interest.

But Greg Nojeim, senior counsel at the Center for Democracy and Technology, said it was alarming that the policies 'don't establish any criteria for whose computer can be searched.'

He added: 'They are saying that they can rifle through all the information contained in a traveller's laptop without having even a smidgeon of evidence that the traveller is breaking the law.'

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said last month that 'the most dangerous contraband is often contained in laptop computers or other electronic devices'.

Searches had uncovered 'violent jihadist materials' as well as images of child pornography.

In an article for U.S.A Today, Chertoff wrote that 'as a practical matter, travellers only go to secondary [a more thorough examination] when there is some level of suspicion.'

He said legislation setting a particular standard for searches would have a 'dangerous, chilling effect' because it could contradict assessments by officers, often made in a split second.

In April, the U.S. Court of Appeals in San Francisco upheld the government's power to conduct searches of an international traveller's laptop without suspicion of wrongdoing.

Welcome to the US of A

I must be missing something obvious. I don't see where this will protect our country from terrorists at all!! You could come into the country with an empty hard drive and connect to any server over the internet to pull data. You could have data mailed to you on a USB drive...there are so many ways....to go through peoples electronic devices at the airport is insane. It will certainly disrupt business between countries...say yer on your way to a meeting in London...and you get detained...there goes your presentation down the tubes.

I dunno, this seems pretty lame...

Maybe this one will help?

Let me know...

In order to accept what this guy says you have to believe that speculation is the cause for rising oil prices, this is very much in doubt.

"The only way speculation can have a persistent effect on oil prices, then, is if it leads to physical hoarding — an increase in private inventories of black gunk. This actually happened in the late 1970s, when the effects of disrupted Iranian supply were amplified by widespread panic stockpiling.

But it hasn’t happened this time: all through the period of the alleged bubble, inventories have remained at more or less normal levels. This tells us that the rise in oil prices isn’t the result of runaway speculation; it’s the result of fundamental factors, mainly the growing difficulty of finding oil and the rapid growth of emerging economies like China. The rise in oil prices these past few years had to happen to keep demand growth from exceeding supply growth.

Saying that high-priced oil isn’t a bubble doesn’t mean that oil prices will never decline. I wouldn’t be shocked if a pullback in demand, driven by delayed effects of high prices, sends the price of crude back below $100 for a while. But it does mean that speculators aren’t at the heart of the story."

As for the second link, after a quick perusal, I don't see any mention of the legislation in question. Please quote the relevant part.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF JOE REPUBLICAN

Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards.

With his first swallow of water, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to ensure their safety and that they work as advertised.

All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer's medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance - now Joe gets it too.

He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe's bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.

In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained.

Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for the laws to stop industries from polluting our air.

He walks on the government-provided sidewalk to subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.

Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe's employer pays these standards because Joe's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union.

If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he'll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some stupid liberal didn't think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.

It is noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe's deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe's money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.

Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime. Joe also forgets that his in addition to his federally subsidized student loans, he attended a state funded university.

Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards to go along with the tax-payer funded roads.

He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers' Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans.

The house didn't have electricity until some big-government liberal stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification.

He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn't have to.

Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn't mention that the beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day. Joe agrees: "We don't need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I'm a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have."

As long as I'm jumping into the thick of it here, I guess I might as well jump in with both feet.

"As Mankind becomes more liberal, they will be more apt to allow that all those who conduct themselves as worthy members of the community are equally entitled to the protections of civil government. I hope ever to see America among the foremost nations of justice and liberality."

- George Washington, President Of The United States, 1789-1797

I see the vote in this poll is squarely in favor of Barack Obama becoming the next president of the United States. That's great news! I guess there's hope for positive change in America after all.

Well, you'll get a kind reception from me! The board's a little unbalanced right now because we lost one of our favorite posters (liberal) and one of our favorite debators (Joe Republican  ) is on vacation. Wait till you meet Del, you'll love him! LOL! Check out some of his old posts...he and Dergible are great debators and I'm afraid I'm not holding the liberal ground very well! So, it's nice to see a liberal face in these parts!!

Peace and Light to You!

I am making this up on the fly so please cut me some slack:

Joe the Republican goes to his California home with his family and his door gets kicked in by dope crazed Robbers. He holds them at gun point until the police come. They arrest the robbers and Joe because the gun he used was a banned semi auto rifle that the California liberals said that he should have turned in.

Joe serves more time in jail then the robber's because he had an evil gun to protect his Family and home, pays a huge fine, along with attorney fee's. The robber's are out the next day with a slap on the hand even though it was their second offense.

Joe, being conservative believes that we should drill in our own Country for oil. Nacy Pelosi and here liberal friends act like children and walk out of the Capital demanding that the lights and C Span camera's be turned off because she might not get her way on the vote.

Joe Republican supports McCain. Obama has run a total leftist campain and has a history of being the most liberal voting Senator in American history. But now daily, Obama changes on position after position to look more conservative. He is now even talking about drilling for oil in the U.S. and his timetable in Iraq is almost like McCains. When any Rebublican calls Obama out on this they get labeled starting a smear campain. The major media turns their backs on these huge flip flops.

Obama has a spiritual leader for over 20 years that is anti American and a racist. Joe Republican does not understand why this is swept under the rug when if McCain even knew anyone like this for a few days would have had to drop out of the race.

Joe the Republican wants to send his children to a faith based school. Joe pays thousands of dollars in taxes to his "public" school district. He is happy to pay for his own childrens education, but does not understand why the Liberals will not even allow him to deduct this from his taxes in any way even though he is paying public school taxes too.

Joe the Republican has served in the military and honors his Country. He cannot understand why Obama would not wear a flag pin. It made him even sader when Obama started doing it as only a political ploy.

I could go on and on. What I am trying to show is that it goes both ways.

Fine points for the other side however, I do wonder why one should get a tax deduction for sending their child to a 'faith based school'? That's called private education (which I think is great!) but if you choose to educate your child based on your religious beliefs I think that is your choice and there shouldn't be a tax 'break' because of it.

However, if your concern was that your public school was not up to par then I think we have a real issue. (and we know that's the case in many areas) We need to support the public school system so that all children get a good education that meets a nationwide standard.

What about people like me? I don't even HAVE children yet I live in a town that is highly desirable to many families because of our education system. People have moved here from out of state just to attend our schools. Our city taxes reflect that and I'm not benefiting from it one iota....except that I know I'm doing my part to support public education and that's OK with me. I want all children to have good educations....

Here is another fact check website and it shows clearly that both McCain and Obama play fast and loose with facts. Notice both have far more less than 100% true statements than they do true ones.

This is BS, and one of the biggest problems with our present system imo. I wish the MSM would call them on this stuff more often and people would pay attention when they do. GRRR

I'm glad These sites exist.

I miss Hermit too....I feel so....alone :(

However, in regards to the inflating tires issue...I don't think Obama intended that to be THE answer, but it's an easy adjustment that if everyone followed through with could make a big impact.

Positive effects of regular maintanance

It all adds up....

Is McCain really a Maverick?

Tax BREAKS for companies that conduct business overseas....let's not protect American jobs. Soon, I will be moving to India so I can take my own job that will be 'co' sourced....of course India may outsource it to any number of other countries so I better have my passport in hand and my luggage packed. The service industry doesn't really pay well enough to maintain my household and service jobs are just about the only thing we'll have left soon....
