10 Essential Hard Rock Albums

I like Kansas...but Boston, Styx and REO....

you can have !!!

I dismiss them immediately. Never liked them from day one. It's all opinion anyway, maybe not as far as 'influence'..but as far as likeability.

I'm just stating an opinion as to why some of those bands have become so hated and none of it has to do with actual talent (or lack thereof), it usually boils down to listener burnout thanks to Classic Rock radio. It's kinda the same case as "hair metal", I don't recall any of those bands being so hated back in their heyday but once some years were put between then and now, perspectives changed. I was never a big fan of any of them to start with but there's no denying their presence as they were all over the radio back then.

That was unexpected! I'm happy to see The Four Horsmen on your list Jahfin (or anybody's list for that matter). They never got the attention they so much deserved.

I've mentioned the Four Horsemen before but it was one of your recent posts that reminded me of them. Definitely a group well worth looking into.

What's the distinction between "Hard Rock" and "Metal"?

A thin one in some cases but I'd say music where the subject matter is killing your mother and the vocalist sounds like someone is strangling a cat in a blender would be a good couple of deciding factors.

10. pronounced 'lĕh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd - Lynyrd Skynyrd

6. Queen II - Queen

k I'm prolly gonna take some flak about Abbey Road being first (or even on the list) as it really isn't a hard rock album and while it's not really it does has elements of it in over half the tracks

I agree with you on that Joelmon..... I NEVER bought into Boston, REO, Styx, or Def Leppard.

I understand the minons of clueless teens and pre-teens obsessing over the bombast of a sugar-coated band like Def Leppard. But, I was never that clueless. I went from The Beatles.... to Led Zeppelin.... with no room for any in-between !!!

And Jahfin you're right on the money when you talk about Boston and their Classic Rock Radio burnout and overplay. Becauseof that overplay, I never want to investigate Boston to see what I might have missed. There's too many other bands to investigate, that do not have this 'bad blood' of radio burnout and overplay. I will happily be ignorant of Boston, as a choice, not because, I know otherwise. I am open-minded about many things. But when the door is closed, in such cases...it does remain closed.

And MOJO, I think you meant to say VH - Fair Warning!!

But then you could say the same about ACDC too couldnt you?

I can easily understand this statement considering the mind-boggling complexity of each AC/DC song ..... I mean, AC/DC does use the same basic chords for each song and I can see how that's not fun to listen to after awhile. But think about it, AC/DC has come up with over ten albums with the same format. They never strayed away from their roots or changed their style to suit the current trend, they stuck to their guns and kept producing electric three-chord albums. And frankly I'm impressed that they've released thirteen albums using those same basic chords. I think they are like fifth in US records sold all time or something like that don't remember exactly

I would think that How the West was Won cant really count as its not a studio production. Its a live album. I think the guy who made this thread was really intending studio;s. Am I wrong?

I think you are. I just checked the OP and found nothing that stipulates studio production.

You are correct....studio albums are not exclusive to this topic.....

"My Generation" from LIVE AT LEEDS is one of the Best examples of Hard Rock on record that I know of...

The reason I said one album per artist, is that I wanted to keep the list concise, but varied among bands. Something you can quicly scan and digest. :)

Meh, I just picked a live Zeppelin record because...well, it's not easy to choose a favorite studio album.

I thought it was a wise move. B)

Todays List (I'm using Rock in the generic sense, as I have no desire to quibble about what is hard rock/heavy metal/prog, etc.):

Tool - Aenima

pearl jam - Vitalogy

Stone Temple Pilots - Core

Soundgarden - Superunknown

Jimi Hendrix - Live at Woodstock

Procol Harum - Procol Harum

Queen - A Night at the Opera

Pink Floyd - The Final Cut

Rush - Exit Stage Left

The Clash - Sandinista

Procol Harum ... wow, what a great pick.

Yeah, earlier this year I found a 2 CD set of their first four albums in a used store. They had been playing CD 1 and I loved it so much I asked the store owner what it was. He showed me the set and I snatched it up. He told me that he was upset to be selling it, as he wanted to play CD 2 next. B)

Later I got the other 2 CD set that has the singles and some outtakes. They were an incredible band, such a shame all anyone hears is "Whiter Shade of Pale," although I must admit that song is superb!
