Best concerts you saw in 2008.

Strider

Recommended Posts

I saw a greater number of concerts in 2008 than I bought records/cds, which is

why I had to extend my "Top concerts of 2008" list to 25, instead of keeping it to

just 10. And even then, I had a hard time keeping it to just 25, having to leave

off a number of good shows.

In raw numbers, I saw 93 concerts and bought 57 records/cds in 2008.

How's it going "Strider?" Now you're really starting to remind me of myself. When I was a little bit younger, I saw well over 200 concerts in one year. As for myself now, I only saw two concerts that I can remember. They were:

BRIAN WILSON - Sunday, 14 September 2008 - Hollywood Bowl - Los Angeles, California

AC/DC - Friday, 12 December 2008 - A T & T Center - San Antonio, Texas (I took my 76 year old father to see this concert. What's more, this is the first concert that my Dad has ever seen.)

ROCK ON!

What did your Dad think of AC/DC? Did he know their music before he went?

How's it going "Stargroves Tangie?" At 76, MY DAD LOVES AC/DC!!! My Dad really enjoyed watching Angus in his teddy boy school outfit. My Dad actually loved being at a concert smelling Marijuana. My Dad was quoted as saying: "If I would have known that being at a concert was this great, I would have gone to a concert years ago!" My dad also LOVES the mighty LED ZEPPELIN. After showing him all of the ZEPPELIN bootleg DVD's that I have, I HAVE CREATED A MONSTER!!!!! My Dad also loves THE BEATLES, THE STONES, THE WHO, PINK FLOYD, THE KINKS, VAN MORRISON, THE DOORS, JUDAS PRIEST and THE BLACK CROWES to name A FEW!! I CREATED A ROCK N' ROLL MONSTER! I'm proud of my Dad. ROCK ON!

What a list strider, lucky you! I don't get out much, attended only 2 concerts but both were fantastic -- Rush and Robert Plant/Alison Krause. Seeing Plant was an especially poignant moment for me as that's the first time I've seen any of Zeppelin, after 38 years of them being my favorite band. But Rush totally blew me away, and now they're my obsession.

Your dad is cool ZeppFanForever :D My father's all-time favorite musician was Fats Domino so I'm sure he would have loved the Raising Sand show but he would have probably walked out before Rush finished the first song.

How's it going "Angel With A Broken Wing?" At 76, my Dad was a late Rock n' Roll bloomer but better late than never. You should have seen the look on my Dad's face at his first concert ever. It was like letting a kid loose in a candy store. My Dad was so blown away by AC /DC LIVE that he's eager to attend more concerts. I was hoping that it would be LED ZEPPELIN, what better way to educate my father during his Rock n' Roll education than LED ZEPPELIN LIVE! ROCK ON!

The best band I saw last year were The Massive Attack Group, twice.

Keeping it 'real' and 'local' as I like to do,means that I can also thoroughly recommend Get The Blessing aka The Blessing. Lovely! On the same 'local'tip' we and I enjoyed Daisy Chapman doing her singing thing.

Top pop was also performed byTinariwen,Spiritualized{as always}NeonNeon,The Zutons,Phantom Limb and loads of others too and also.As well. In fact as soon as I press 'send' I'll remember loads more...

Wow! You have a real cool Dad! My Mom is around your Dad's age but she's not really into rock music, but she does like the "Immigrant Song" only because she saw some people dressed like aliens "sing" to it on the Gong Show (remember that show, hosted by Chuck Barris?).

I caught 4 concerts this year....

Foo Fighters (w/ Against Me!) @ The Air Canada Centre

Eric Clapton (w/ Robert Randolph & The Family Band) @ The Molson Amphitheatre

Kid Rock/Lynyrd Skynyrd @ The Molson Amphitheatre

Oasis (@ Toronto Virgin Festival, the infamous Noel Gallagher fan attack) @ Olympic Island.

Foo's were awesome.

Clapton sounded great, but didn't talk hardly at all, plus it was absolutely freezing that night.

Skynyrd was awesome, Kid Rock is surprisingly good live (not a big fan of his music)

Oasis sounded great, but the gig was cut short by 30 minutes because of the damn attack on Noel. Plus the ferry ride back to mainland Toronto took over 2 hours, so I didn't get home until 2:30AM (and I had to get up at 6AM for school)

I don't think I've been to 10 concerts this year. Well, I probably had, but some of them were small ones. My favorites were: Iron Maiden , Whitesnake/Def Leppard , Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin, Paul Gilbert and a Romanian band called Trooper.

You need to get out more !!

I know, it's TRUE! Hahaha.

Seriously, there were lots of shows that I missed this year for various

reasons that I wanted to see. Black Crowes cancelled because of illness.

Neil Young cancelled because he didn't want to cross a picket line.

My Morning Jacket I missed because of a scheduling snafu. Others

were missed due to lack of funds, health reasons, family/love life

problems, and also due to the fact that because the 2008 election was

too important to NOT to do something, I spent more time being involved

with the campaigns than usual. Hence sometimes I was out of state...my

trip thru the South for example...and there never seemed to be a good

show wherever I was at the time; I was either a day late or too early.

As for my normal rate of concert attendance, from the age of 10-18, ie.

1972-1980 I averaged roughly 20 shows a year.

Then, during my Army service from 1981-1984, about 40-50 per annum.

After that, the floodgates opened: 1985-1997, ages 23-35, I hit 200 shows

a year, give or take a dozen or two...helped in large part by a couple of

cool girls I knew who worked for Goldenvoice, the legendary local promoters

in L.A.

Since then, my concert-going rate has slipped to around 100-120 shows a

year with the lowest being 2007's 63 shows and the highest being 2004's

and 2006's 141...I know, it's freaky how it was the exact same number both

years.
