Underrated artists/bands

Another underknown band from my arsenal. Half the fun of music collecting is and was just going into a record store and buying something from the cover alone, the name of the band and the impulse for something NEW. This group was no exception in my quest for variety. A semi-"prog" rock band from the early 70s. You can read further about them in the link I provide.

I'm sorta amazed at some of the bands people have listed here as being underated. Elvis Costello and Yes for instance. They've received far and wide acclaim from critics, fans and publications alike.

One of my favorites as I got into 'new wave'. Produced by Philip Glass this New York City band put out a couple of albums and this was just released last year on cd for the first time. Virtually unknown but to few, they got 'around' by way of mouth and a little exposure on some college radio in the earliest of days.

I was working at a record store so I got to preview everything we got in that looked interesting. My manager used to blast my ass for playing stuff that was obscure and not 'on the charts'. Fuck him ! I was into it for the music, of course he was into it for the numbers and sales bonuses.

I've been listening to a lot of America recently. I remember hearing them on the radio in the 70s but I didn't pay them much attention back then. They never really hit the big time, but now I see they were really good; I wish I had seen them! And *young* too; Gerry Beckley was born in '52 but opened for Hendrix

I'm a pretty big Elvis Costello fan but I can't say I've ever thought of him as "underrated" . Then again I've never understood exactly who is doing the "rating". He's definitely received plenty of airplay over the years and nearly always gets rave reviews for his work so I'm not sure if he's someone I would consider "underrated".

Some of my favorite artists who aren't exactly known by the masses:

John Prine

Tift Merritt

Ryan Adams

Tres Chicas

Goose Creek Symphony

Steve Goodman

Jerry Jeff Walker

Caitlin Cary

Billy Joe Shaver

The Old 97s

Whiskeytown

The Itals
