may i add Vancouver 19th 75...your right about the 11th to.

i hate the 77 versions though

good pick

I always looked at the 6/21/77 version to be a sister to the 3/19/75 one. the solos are pretty much the same. I do like the one from the 21st better though. but those two are my all time favorites :D

almost all, give or take dates in 77 replaced by IMTOD

They only played it 11 times in 77 (according to the tapes) but it seemed starting the third leg it had became a main stay...

Its tough do you go for the great vocals of the 72 versions, the amazing solos of the 73 versions, or maybe the longer 75 versions? Tough call. The only 77 version I really like is from LTTE and thats mainly because Bonzo's drumming is so damn good.

For me, its either the 6/25/72 version or possibly one from the German shows in 73 where Jimmy was just on fire and his guitar tone was great as well.

This question is for all of my fellow die hard hard core ZEPPELIN fanatics. In your opinion, where was the best live version of "Over The Hills And Far Away" performed at?

HTWWW or any version before Plant's voice changed sometime in late '72/early '73. I am familiar with versions on TSRTS and a handful of recordings, including Earl's Court (75), Southampton (73) and Osaka (72 - bad recording, but I can tell Plant still has it on OTHAFA). Any version after the voice change is just crap. There's just no comparison between the searing, laser-sharp rendition offered up on HTWWW (and yes, I have read The Garden Tapes, so I'm aware of the "purity" issues regarding this song and that recording in general. That doesn't change my view) and the plodding, semi-spoken versions that come later. No Jimmy Page guitar solo would change this for me and I'm astonished that others feel differently. But then, that's what opinions are all about.

I like the HTWWW version, but I love in the later years (around 1975) when Robert added the "Do it!" to the beginning.

Hi "Roxie!" The HTWWW version seems to be the best version since Plant's voice was in rare form. ROCK ON!

Wholeheartedly agree. The song without the vocal line isn't the same!

The one version I'm most familiar with is HTWWW. I've heard other versions, mainly through YouTube.

I never did like bootlegs, of any band. I'm an audio nut, plus I have respect for the artists. I am one of about five people left that buys CD's and doesn't download, but when I do have to download, I pay for it.

If they wanted me to hear those performances they wouldn't be bootlegged. I really wish sine douche hadn't stole all the crap from page.

That said, I like HTWWW mainly because of the excellent sound quality of the recording. And I love a great guitar solo, but I tend to look at the overall arrangement and blend of the music, which would explain why I'm deeply in love with songs like Your Time Is Gonna Come and How Many More Times(i know that has a solo, but not a huge one)

oh, here's one i found on YouTube. I have no clue where its from, bootleg or somethin?

not near as good as HTWWW, mainly cuz of the vocals, but its not bad:

and while on the topic of his fading vocals, here's one where his range is kinda still there in 75, although not being strained at all:

The question is: why did he change the melody? He could have sung it in a lower octave if he wasn't able to hit the first high note to each vocal line ("many times" etc.) and kept the proper melody there. Instead, he decided to remove the 'hook' and basically ruin his own vocals to the song. You can't do that to a song as great as this, but....he did.

Its actually quite easy to sing this melody, even I can do it, and I ain't no singer.

To this day, I don't understand it.

Still, I've always loved how Page Jones and Bonham went off during the solo,

some of my favorite Zeppelin moments ever happened during these jams.

By the end of '72, Robert had developed nodes on his vocal chords (callouses essentially). While the touring schedule had eased with their success, he'd still torn up his instrument. The latter of 72 and the bulk of 73 saw him stuggling, hence the layoff in 74 when he had corrective surgery on his throat. The recovery from this and the re-learning how to use his voice is apparent in the Physical Graffiti sessions and the 75 tour. It really wasn't until the 77 tour that he'd regained command, albeit in a lower register, of his voice. Unfortunately Jimmy wasn't at the top of his game by that point.

How's it going "Evster2012?" The results truly showed on "Over The Hills And Far Away," thats why Robert sang the song in a lower key than usual. Good answer Evster2012. ROCK ON!
