Mangani
Jeremy Brett, a captivating actor, and in my opinion, the best actor to have ever played Sherlock Homes. Without doubt. I have the entire box set collection. I also have the entire Basil Rathbone movie collection and I love Basil Rathbone but Brett was in a different class. The two Watsons in the Brett series (Burke and Hardwicke)were also the best there has been, particularly Hardwicke. Having said that I did also enjoy Peter Cushing's turn as Holmes in the 1950s Hammer version of Hound of The Baskervilles while Ian Richardson gave a decent portrayal of Holmes in a couple of early 1980s t.v movies, shortly before the Brett series began. Jeremy Brett was in a league of his own as Holmes though. He brought so much vitality and quirkyness to the screen, just like in the books. The less said about Robert Downey Jnr the better. Mangani
Ok I'll relent. I thank England for lovely full of character old pubs and country inns with roaring fireplaces and real ale. Some of my favourite locals near where I live: And not forgetting real English ale like this: Edited December 30, 2010 by Mangani

Magic Fills the Air
Yes, nobody builds castles better than the English. Two castles from my home county Warwickshire: Warwick Castle which was on Cromwell's side during the English Civil War. Kenilworth Castle in comparison wasn't on Cromwell's side, hence it's a ruin. But I think it's hanutingly beautiful. Me at Kenilworth Castle. I look very small! Edited December 30, 2010 by Magic Fills the Air
Magic Fills the Air
Old buildings that last for centuries. This is the local pharmacy in the town where I grew up. It used to be an inn where Charles II stayed during the English Civil War. There is a secret underground tunnel to the church across the road which was used by the King. Mangani
I seriously don't get some American's love for Benny Hill. He hasn't been seen on our screens since the 1980s. Pretty funny in his time but old hat stuff that hasn't aged well is never shown here these days anymore. Britain fell out of love with Benny Hill over 20 years ago. Probably even longer than that. Strange isn't it?

FireOpal
I will stay out of this thread for the most part because I don't believe in banging your own trumpet BUT I had some delicious cheeses last night. First up was Long Clawson Creamy Blue Stilton and second up was oaked smoked cheddar from Somerset. I don't believe anyone does cheese better than the English. Stripey Jack is really delicious too. As is Double Gloucester, but it's super fattening Whoever mentioned Ewan MacGregor - he's fookin' brilliant, but he's Scottish. And Liam Neeson is from Belfast IIRC. Thank you England for so many things, including Jaguars aka sex on wheels Edited January 4, 2011 by FireOpal

I really love England and the rest of the UK for its places of historical significance! I could spend days on end visiting castles across England and thoroughly enjoy myself! What fun! There is so much more to England than just the usual tourist attractions like the big cities like London, for example! The small towns and the countryside which are so picturesque, IMHO, are THE places to be and look out for, if you ask me!
