Last night I had one of the worst incidents I can remember as a parent.

I came home and my 14 year-old son called me to his room.

He wanted to show me a video from Facebook on his iPod.

He said "it might make you sick to your stomach" as he started it.

My first thought was that it would be something gross, puking, I don't know.

Instead, it was 2 guys speaking to the camera in I guess what was Mexican.

Then the camera pulled out, and they were on their knees in the dirt, hands tied behind them in front of a wooden fence.

Suddenly a guy walks up with a logging chain saw - the kind with about a 3-4 foot bar - and begins cutting the first guy's head off.

I was in complete shock as I was scrambling to stop the video.

Apparently it's a video of an execution by a Mexican drug cartel.

Back when Daniel Pearl was kidnapped and beheaded, they linked the video from many major talk show sites, because of all the outrage.

I made the mistake of watching it, and to this day I regret it.

You just don't forget things like that.

And that was just a crappy phone-cam video.

This was in absolutely perfectly-focused high-definition digital video, and it was like actually standing there.

Even though I stopped the clip when I saw what was happening, it's obvious they did the same to the 2nd man.

This is the most disturbing thing I've ever seen, and it was off my 14 year-old's Facebook timeline.

The knowledge that he watched the whole clip makes my heart physically hurt.

I tried not to get too upset with my son, since he obviously felt some kind of way about it by calling me in to see it.

So I talked to him about my feelings having seen the Daniel Pearl video, and tried to impress upon him the importance of what you put into your brain.

But I just can't stop thinking about it, and what kind of people would put it on Facebook.

Anyway, I called a guy I go to church with who works in the cyber crimes division of the Sheriff's Office.

He said videos have a "digital signature", and they can add it to a database of blocked signatures to prevent it from being added/uploaded.

He said the problem is someone will put the clip in an editing program, change a single pixel across the entire clip, which changes the digital signature, and it makes the rounds all over again until they block it again.

Sometimes the joke is all-too-painfully true - "I don't want to live on this planet any more."

I remember seeing a photo of something that was pretty disturbing to me when I was younger. It took awhile for the trauma to fade away.

There are some sick bastards in this world. It is hard to comprehend a persons state of mind that can commit such atrocities. Was this a youtube that can be taken down? I hope so, cuz that shit should not be seen.

On the other hand, there are alot good people out there doing good for humanity.

I watched a show on Maximum Security prisons one night and there was a scene that was very disturbing that I did not plan on seeing, did not want to see, but unfortunaltey saw. It was friggin terrible. And to this day it is still in my head from time to time.

My uncle really wanted me to watch that Daniel Pearle video and I would not. I knew a little about it and there was no way I wanted to see that. I could not understand why my uncle wanting me to see it so bad. He's a little f-ed up himself and probably would have benefitted from not seeing it himself.

The maximum security scene i saw was about 2 years ago but I remember reacting like the way you wrote about your experience above. We probably all see things that we wish we hadn't or wished were not happening. Humans have the capability of doing some really brutal things to each other ,but we also have the capability to do some really great things for each other. I'm not much help but don;t lose faith in our goodness is all I can say.

I think you did a great thing in talking to your son about it. He won't forget that.

I am well aware of the horrible things that go on in this world, and I have absolutely zero interest in seeing them happen be it in real life or on the internet. I feel a little queasy just reading you post, and I feel for you and your son. Knowing what happens is one thing but seeing things like this, even at an adult age, can be quite traumatic. Time will make it easier, but it might take a long while. It's good that you guys talked about it and that you have the kind of relationship where you are able to.

I've seen a few things on the internet that I regret and wish I had never seen that I've dealt with alone. The sick part is that this video will be out there forever and it will be passed around and linked under a false name in order to shock unsuspecting people.Some of the people in this world are just sick.

I remember when the Daniel Pearle video was making the rounds. My dad watched it and it made him feel pretty sick for a few days. I have not watched it, and never will.

My son who is 20 saw that Daniel video from another friend showing him,it really disturbed him.Once you do see something like that , your right you can't take it back. He is studying to be a firefighter and through training has seen decapitated head. So for his strength and dedication He can handle it. God bless those who can. I have two daughters and each use the internet, although I don't monitor them 24 hours a day, I know that they only go on acceptable websites. Even I wouldn't have a clue how to enter a site that I may find offensive.I just stay on sites that I know, or sites that I need information from.

Facebook has a lot to answer. I have never been on Facebook or Twitter and do not want to. It is too much a intrusion into your life. It can ruin people. As far as this disgusting video goes to prove is that there are some weird fucks in this world. What is it with these "humans"? Are they so dehuminised that they can carry out an "ordinary life" knowing what they have done? Same with Child Pornographers can they really sleep well at night?

I've seen this, the Mexican Drug Cartel Decapitation video. It shows two men executed side by side, a drug runner and his uncle. It seems to me they were heavily drugged at the time as both remain completely devoid of any natural instinct to even flinch, let alone resist or survive, and their heart rates and breathing remain normal, even after the chainsaw is fired up in front of them. I'm gonna assume that it is an iPod touch, and it was seen through the facebook app. It's not facebook's fault, they aren't responsible for what their users post and if it violates terms it is removed when it is reported.

EDIT: At first I cast doubt as to whether or not the video was genuine - based on the testimony here, and elsewhere, it seems like the video is indeed real...and for that, I'm very sorry you had to witness it. Unfortunately, there are assholes on the internet, and we'll see these types of images/videos passed around for a long time to come.

I've never watched anything nearly as horrible as that...I wouldn't be able to stomach it. I've heard some awful stories from my mother, who's a nurse, but that's still not the same...the "worst" video that I've watched (aside from the Budd Dwyer video) was the video showing the deaths of Vic Morrow, Myca Dinh Le, and Renee Shin-Yi Chen on the set of the Twilight Zone movie: Thankfully, you don't see anything too gory...but if you pause the video at the right moment, such as I did, you are able to see the moment that Morrow and Le died. That sent me into shock, and it still makes me sick to think about.

Yes, as someone else mentioned, he was viewing Facebook on his iPod Touch - it wasn't actually downloaded to his device.

And because I understand the curious nature of teenage boys, I didn't want to make such a big deal out of it that he felt shamed or humiliated.

His curiosity prompted him to see something I wish he'd not seen, but it can't be taken back.

I have been revisiting the whole deal with him to continue giving him insight into why it was something he doesn't want to put into his mind.

Yeah, unfortunately there was zero doubt from the minute the execution began that it was absolutely real and not some hoax.

Unlike the Daniel Pearl video, which was apparently taken with a phonecam and was somewhat pixellated from being enlarged, this was clear and sharp and obviously filmed with a high-def digital video cam.

There are some sick puppies in the world that think nothing of posting such vile images online. I remember when a rag mag photographer took a photo of River Phoenix, lying in state in a coffin at a funeral home, a few days after his death. That image can still be found...I saw it by mistake when searching for photos. Unfortunately it was hard to miss as it came up with other photos in Yahoo.

Type O, I am sorry your son saw this video. I know what it is like when you try to shield your children from such violence in the media that when something like this rears it's ugly head (no pun intended), it is maddening.

Which is precisely why I realized it must have had a negative impression on him, and I resisted the initial impulse to get angry or otherwise complicate his feelings regarding what he witnessed.

If it hadn't bothered him that much, or if he felt I would give him hell about it, he probably would have kept it to himself.

Either way, I'd be concerned.

I'd certainly be concerned if didn't affect him enough to matter, and I'd be concerned if he didn't want to risk me becoming upset with him.

The latter was my primary reason for not overreacting.

He had simply commented on that video, expressing shock and disgust at someone who would do that, echoing almost all of the comments there.

My main objective now is cutting the Friends and Pages list down.

Kids rack up Facebook Friends as a kind of cool quotient when, in reality, the idea of a 14 year-old actually knowing even 200-300 people is silly, so a Friends list that exceeds 2,500 is ludicrous.

Same with LIKEd Pages.

Many of these Pages are simply dumps for raunchy and highly inappropriate content, whether in the form of humor or just random bullshit.

So the exponential nature of all the garbage from 2,500+ Friends and countless Pages, each with their own countless numbers of their own, all funneling down onto any particular 14 year-old's Timeline is beyond staggering.

It's tough to find a balance, and the initial response is to just eliminate the source (Facebook) altogether.

But that's not really fair, as the vast majority of Facebook isn't particularly evil, beyond the evil of wasting time.

I think as the amount of content on his Timeline is reduced by reducing the amount of Friends to add content, it should begin a process of removing some of the allure of Facebook, not taking as long to check and respond to Friends that they actually know, and moving on to other activities.

At least that's my optimistic plan.

This is just reason number 1,621,770 why I stay away from Facebook and Twitter and all the other gadgetry that infests modern society. I was briefly on Facebook before pulling the plug and deleting my account because it was a pain in the arse.

Unfortunately I may have to rejoin as it seems to be the only way I can stay in touch with my nieces and a few other of my young relatives of the Facebook generation.

I remember reading about the Daniel Pearl incident but purposely avoided the video...just as I have no need to see the Mexican Cartel video. I was in the Army for four years...I've seen enough things that I don't need to see again.

Fortunately I have my e-mail and other internet accounts set to strict filtering settings...nothing gets in my inbox from anybody except my closest friends. And none of my friends would send me something like that.

What planet do you live on? My friends with teenage kids would like to know. They're lucky if they get a grunt when they come home.

I also find your 'agenda' remark regarding TypeO a little harsh. The only agenda I get from TypeO is that he likes his music loud, his beer cold, his women hot, and his cars fast.
