BlackDog71 Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 What does everybody think about this song? With more chances to hear this song, "Hey Hey What Can I Do" has become one of my absloute favorites from Zep. I feel Plant's voice is so top-notch and the guitar during the chorous is so sexy and shows how truly versatile they were. I love this song and i am amazed they never felt it was good enough to make it to a studio album. I heard somewhere it was one of the outtakes from Zeppelin III (maybe it didn't fit the groove or something). What a fantastic outtake! Quote
Thorzep Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 Yeah. It was the B-side to Immigrant Song if memory serves. Also kind of a tricky song to play for a couple of reasons: -The acoustic guitar and mandolin have a very loose feel and the drums are so heavy! (But then again, that's the whole point isn't it?) -Also, the last measure of every verse drops a beat. It would be very easy to mess this one up live. (Especially if you were having a beer or two!) -This is one of the few songs that is not tuned to pitch. It's somewhere between G and A. Not that this really matters, just a bit of interesting trivia. Quote
BlackDog71 Posted November 25, 2007 Author Posted November 25, 2007 Thorzep....Thanks for your response and all the interesting info. I did not know any of that. Quote
Audrey Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 Hey Hey what can I do was the reason I bought the complete studio recordings. Because as far as I know it does not exist on any other cd. Yes, it is a great song. Strange that it would be considered an outtake. Quote
Soccerzubs Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 I absolutely love it, great melody and the drumming and guitar work is excellent, and Robert's stretching vocals and of course Jonsey to back them all up. Quote

Tea For One Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 Page played it live with The Black Crowes, it's on "Live At The Greek". Cool tune. Quote
eternal light Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 Hey Hey What Can I Do - Led Zeppelin Quote
Mountain Hopper Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 I know jimmy didn't like the sound on this track because they were experimenting and put the mic inside the guitar, and you can tell it's a little "softer". Regardless, a great song. The first box set brought it back to life. Quote

Rock Action Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 One of my favorite Zep tunes of all time. It was actually a FM radio hit back in 1974, even though it was a 1970 B-side to Immigrant Song. KSAN in SF used to play it regularly then. GREAT song. Quote

lzfan715 Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 I have it Bside of the Immigrant Song, and on a jukebox 45. Both are in picture frames where they can't be hurt. Quote

lzfan715 Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 Knowing the way Jimmy was, I'd imagine it was delibrate. Quote
Henrik Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 Reminds me, it already over a year since I made this slideshow!! [/shameless self promotion] Quote
songbird Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 Knowing the way Jimmy was, I'd imagine it was delibrate. Yeah but I meant is it 'somewhere between G and A' as opposed to definitely G# or A flat... (except in the case of Tangerine it'd be Am).. I can't remember if its sharp or flat but its 'off.' Quote
Bill Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 I believe during recording of both songs the tape was sped up a little so at normal speed the songs would be flat. Quote
