Swede
Hmmmm I'm no big admirer of 90's music, mostly because much of it sounds so... 90's. But some of the bands I enjoyed listening to was: Early 90's: The Black Crowes Kula Shaker Verve Pearl Jam The Four Horsemen The Stone Roses late 90's (and still listen frequently to): Hellacopters The Strollers The Roadrunners

Penny Lane
Rock and Roll died in the 80s sometimes we think it's recovering from the mortal coma it's in, but it's just an ilusion, just the ghost of Rock telling us to remeber, to keep taking care of it, in the hopes that it'll wake up and live again Maybe if all of us make a wish... my point is, since rock became an industry, it lost its spirit, so if i had to choose the best band of the 90s i could, and it'll most likely be Soundgarden, but i can't speak of the best Rock and Roll band of the 90s. I hate to break it to you but rock n' roll became an industry the moment Col. Tom Parker met Elvis Presley, if not before. Rock n' Roll doesn't have to top the charts to be "alive", at least not to me. I have been a music fan since the early 70s and have had no problem finding music that moves me ever since, including the year 2007. Like most any other year I've had trouble keeping up with all of the new releases I would love to hear. There's definitely no shortage of good new music out there, just a shortage of time (and funds) to be able to listen to it all. As for rock dying in the 80s, I can't say I get that at all as it is one of my favorite decades of music with artists such as R.E.M., the Replacements, the Cure, Los Lobos, Omar & the Howlers, Del Fuegos, the Cruzados, Guadalcanal Diary, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, the BoDeans, U2, Rank n' File, 10,000 Maniacs, Jason & the Scorchers, Lone Justice, the Long Ryders and many, many more. Jahfin
I'm ashamed to know I used to think this way. I'm also very grateful that my eyes are open now. I'm curious to know why so many at this site attribute the so-called "death of rock n' roll" to something that happened in the 80s. To my ears, it is one of the most musically vibrant decades on record.

mckjuana
and for my first post I will say that the Canadian Band "The Tea Party" were IMO the closest successor to the zeppelin legacy, worthy of carrying the proverbial torch. Their first two albums are absolutely amazing. the guitar work and vocals are seconds to (almost) none - lyrically they can get a bit far up their own ar$e but I highly recommend anyone here to check out "Splendor Solis" and the "Edges of Twilight", in that order. I have been a harcore zepp fan for about 17 years now (currently 30 years old) and these guys are the only ones who have come close to evoking the same kind of passion for the music as zepp did. but unfortunately they broke up a couple of years ago but un-unfortunately they were going a little bit stale and naff, so its probably a good thing. When they began, they were kings. anyway enough praise for them. the the guy on the original page pointing out the lack of soundgarden love, you can throw me into the pot for that too. awesome band. got progressively better ane better. BonzoEqualsGoodStuff
The Chili Peppers are my other favorite band and I think they were pretty much brilliant until their last two albums. The early 80s through the late 90s produced great music from them. I could go on and on about them for days, especially about Flea and John Frusciante, but I'll spare you haha. TypeO
Soundgarden - Jesus Christ Pose is perhaps the greatest example of the heavy, chunky sound that IS grunge in existence. Tool - the new Zeppelin in terms of mysticism and lack of concern for commercial/mainstream appeal. Ministry - one of the most influential bands of the industrial scene. Monster Magnet - combined the heavy, Zeppelin-esque feel of the 70's with the intensity of new metal. Alice In Chains - would have been just as successful even if there had been NO "Seattle/Grunge" hype.
