Actor Roy Scheider, seen here in 2004, was best known for portraying the police chief in the thriller Jaws. (Stuart Ramson/Associated Press) Scheider died Sunday at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences hospital in Little Rock, Ark., hospital spokesman David Robinson said. The hospital did not release a cause of death. However, hospital spokeswoman Leslie Taylor said Scheider had been treated for multiple myeloma at the hospital's Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy for the last two years. Scheider received two Oscar nominations, for best-supporting actor in 1971's The French Connection, in which he played the police partner of Oscar-winner Gene Hackman, and for best-actor for 1979's All That Jazz, the autobiographical Bob Fosse film. However, he was best known for his role in Steven Spielberg's 1975 film Jaws, the enduring classic about a killer shark terrorizing beachgoers and well as millions of moviegoers. Widely hailed as the film that launched the era of the Hollywood blockbuster, it was also the first movie to earn $100 million at the box office. Scheider starred with Richard Dreyfuss, who played an oceanographer. Continue Article In 2005, one of Scheider's most famous lines in the movie — "You're gonna need a bigger boat" — was voted No. 35 on the American Film Institute's list of best quotes from U.S. movies. That year, some 30 years after Jaws premiered, hundreds of movie buffs flocked to Martha's Vineyard, off the southeastern coast of Massachusetts, to celebrate the great white shark. The island's JawsFest '05 also brought back some of the cast and crew, including screenwriter Carl Gottlieb and Peter Benchley, who wrote the novel that inspired Spielberg's classic. Spielberg, Scheider and Dreyfuss were absent. Scheider was also politically active. He participated in rallies protesting against U.S. military action in Iraq, including a massive New York City demonstration in March 2003 that police said drew 125,000 chanting activists. Mangani
Oh damn, this is so sad. Jaws is my favourite movie of all time. Jaws was the greatest cinematic experience I ever had. Nothing ever came close to that, for me and it is what I judge every other film by. None have ever matched it and none ever will, especially considering the modern penchant for showy eye candy OTT effects over style and substance. RIP Roy. My fave line of his in Jaws: "That's some bad hat, Harry!" I think Jaws works because of Roy's down to earth believable presence. Sure, Robert Shaw steals the movie in the second half and Dreyfuss is also excellent but through all of the movie it's largely Chief Brody's eyes and emotions that we watch the story through. If they had got the Brody casting wrong (Charlton Heston originally wanted the role for gawd's sake!!) the film would have been less effective. The Seven Ups was a little gem. Almost unknown and little seen. It was made after the French Connection but before Jaws. Roy was very gritty and real in that role.

Joelmon
I spent a couple of months on Martha's Vineyard in 2002 and would ride my bicycle thru Oak Bluffs and Edgartown where much of the harbor and the 'bridge/backwater' scenes took place. I'd always stop and just reminince. I was 18 when Jaws came out..and yeah, it was kinda chilling..the boomp/boomp boom/ boomp of the soundtrack got you ready for the next SURPRISE of Bruce the shark. Tension abounded in the theatres... RIP Roy...you lived a fairly longlife...full of excitement...and boy what a deadeye shot you made to 'blow up' Bruce at the end of the movie...The theatre crowd erupted in CHEERS at that !!! bigstickbonzo
A part of me has died. I've come to appreciate the scene in Jaws right before Hooper shows up at the dinner table where Brody and Sean mimic one another. With John Williams' piano score and Ellen looking on, its a very surreal moment that has nothing to do with the film-much like the bicycle scene from Butch Cassidy. He was the sole reason why Jaws 2 is worth watching. The reason why I watched SeaQuest when I was younger. Scheider was one time an amateur boxer, a reason why his nose is all mashed in. The little things he does in Jaws that make his character so memorable. FOREGROUND MY ASS!!

TRB
Undeniable presence in Jaws; I never have seen The French Connection the whole way through despite my efforts. I've caught bits and pieces and always ended up having to go somewhere or do something else. Argh. Too bad, that is. I wonder, though...with all the talent that has passed on in recent years, how long will it be until one of those "who we lost this year" montages is filled with ne'er-do-wells and pseudo-talents we can't be arsed to give a shit about? Virginia
I was really sorry to hear he had died He really was terrific in Jaws; I love the scene when he and Robert Shaw were drunk on the boat, singing sea chantys (sp?) Jaws is still the scariest movie I've ever seen; the combination of suspense, the music, and the feeling that you need to pull your legs up off the floor, lol. I saw it when it first hit in '75 (?) and it's still in the back of my mind every time I go into the ocean. The great cast made it believeable.
