JIMMY PAGE ON THIS DAY (Archive)

Recommended Posts

They could have quite easily crowdsourced the On This Day entries from members of the forum.

Well to be fair....my entry would read 19th September 1976 Led Zeppelin released Led Zeppelin 3, been a fan for years and here's a picture of a kitten to prove it.

The site does have to appeal to a wide range of fans.

Today's post: March 23rd 2013.

Here’s one for the guitarists out there. With the incredible Thumbs Carlisle, aka Kenneth Carlille, paying a playing tribute to Country/Swing guitarists that helped drive the instrument into Country in the 50s.

On This Day has become a vehicle for whatever Peter Makowksi finds on the internet and thinks is cool.

Precisely! That site began as an over-hyped vanity project for Jimmy and is now nothing more than an occasional curiousity for Peter.

I think we're up to 3/4 posts by Peter now. They're getting boring really quickly.

I'll give him credit for trying. I just wish they'd all realize while it doesn't take much to satiate the masses, it's going to take more. They could have easily done a behind the scenes clip of the John Varvatos filming, for example. IMHO artist's official websites are supposed to provide content and features on the artist you can't find elsewhere.

'Ain't it the truth, Kenog.... RIP Ronnie.. Miss him greatly and Jimmy Page was a TRUE friend of Ronnie Lane....

Got the "Pic Of The Week" and wrote a little piece in UltimateClassicRock.com today in honor of Ronnie....

This is a shot Jimmy picked & published for the Genesis bio..... It's been on OTD before...

Mark,

Really pleased to see that your photo was chosen - very appropriate. Ronnie Lane was a huge loss for so many reasons. For me, he combined original musical talent with a very sharp sense of humour. So sad abut his final years.

I first heard Gallows Pole on a 1962 Folkways ‘Smithsonian’ LP by Fred Gerlach who was, I believe, the first white guy to play the twelve-string guitar in this Leadbelly style. I was so inspired by his version that I used it as a basis, completely changing the arrangement, for the Led Zeppelin Gallows Pole. However his twelve-string playing is superb.

Fred comments "this is based on one of Leadbelly’s song, which itself has a long history dating back hundreds of years in England. The rhythms and finger picking styles have taken four years to evolve."

Fred apparently ‘ran around’ with Tiny Leadbetter, Leadbelly’s niece, who turned him onto the twelve-string guitar.
